Football: Wellington sign former Victory coach Merrick

Wellington Phoenix appointed Ernie Merrick as their new coach Monday, with the former Melbourne Victory mentor immediately vowing to bring a more attacking brand of football to the A-League club. Merrick won two A-League titles during his six years with the Victory and was twice named the Australia-based competition's coach of the year. The Scot replaces Ricki Herbert, who departed in February after a dismal run of results that eventually saw the Phoenix finish last in the 10-team league.

Football: Spain's Gombau to coach Adelaide United

Adelaide United on Tuesday announced that Spaniard Josep Gombau has agreed a two-year deal to coach the A-League club. The 36-year-old coach of Hong Kong's Kitchee, who previously worked with youth players at Barcelona, beat an impressive international field of applicants to win the head coach role at Adelaide starting in July. Adelaide United said Gombau's youth and experience were an exciting combination.

Football: Mariners break through to end Wanderers run

Central Coast Mariners broke through for their first Australian A-League grand final victory at the fourth attempt to end the Western Sydney Wanderers fairytale winning run in Sydney on Sunday. The triumph ended the Mariners' title heartbreak after losing all three of their previous grand finals in 2011, 2008 and 2006.

Football: Australia's Babalj signs for AZ Alkmaar

Young Melbourne Heart striker Eli Babalj has signed with Holland's AZ Alkmaar on a four-year deal, the Australian club said on Saturday. Babalj, 21, has travelled to Holland to undergo a medical and resolve personal terms after AZ scouts watched him play at Melbourne Heart this year. He started to attract interest from European clubs after his breakout season in 2011-12 when he scored nine goals, propelling Heart to its first A-League finals campaign. The striker's potential was recognised last year when he signed with Serbian Superliga side Red Star Belgrade.

Football: Ono's Wanderers one win from fairytale finish

Just 10 months after they were formed, Western Sydney Wanderers and their star signing Shinji Ono can cap a fairytale debut season Sunday when they play Central Coast Mariners in Australia's A-League final. The Wanderers lifted the Premier's Plate as the top team after 27 regular rounds last month, but under the Australian system the champions are the ones who win the grand final.

Australian A-League player of the year Marco Rojas said Thursday he will leave Melbourne Victory this month and move to an unnamed club in Europe. Rojas, 21, scored 15 goals for Victory this season and is one of the hottest properties in the domestic league. "I have absolutely loved my time at Melbourne Victory, from the fans to the support of my teammates as well as the coaches and the staff -- they have all definitely helped make me who I am today," Rojas said.

Football: Mariners to play Wanderers in A-League final

Central Coast will face Western Sydney in next weekend's Australian A-League final after beating Melbourne Victory 1-0 at home on Sunday. A 42nd-minute long-range strike from Daniel McBreen, this season's golden boot winner, proved the winner to put the Mariners into their fourth title decider in eight seasons. It was a coaching triumph for Graham Arnold, who had to rotate his squad for a mid-week trip for the Mariners to China to play Guizhou Renhe in an AFC Champions League match.

Football: Ono stunner in Wanderers win to reach final

Japanese star Shinji Ono produced an exquisite goal on Friday to propel Western Sydney Wanderers into Australia's A-League final in their debut season. Ono's dipping chip into the top right corner clinched the Wanderers a 2-0 win to dump two-time defending champions Brisbane Roar out of the championship title race. Tony Popovic's Wanderers are now one win away from being crowned champions, having already created Australian sporting history by securing the first-past-the-post Premiers' Plate to become the first expansion club to win silverware in their inaugural year.

Football: Heart release senior players after poor season

Melbourne Heart said Monday they will release senior players Simon Colosimo, Matt Thompson and Clint Bolton after missing out on this season's Australian A-League playoffs. The club said they also will not be re-signing injury prone Brazilian playmaker Fred and Dutchman Marcel Meeuwis. But the Heart have retained Argentinian midfielder Jonatan Germano and recruited winger Iain Ramsay from Adelaide United. "We have a very talented group of younger players who are growing together and Iain will complement them well," head coach John Aloisi said.
