Football: Listless Australia face Brazil qualifying fight

Socceroos star Tim Cahill admits the team's 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with Oman could come back to haunt them as Australian media lashed the "listless and disjointed" display. Brett Holman salvaged a point with a late long-range drive Tuesday evening but it left Australia in a precarious position and in danger of not making the 2014 tournament in Brazil. With just the top two teams going through, they are third in Asian Group B on six points with Oman, seven points adrift of leaders Japan and a point behind Jordan, with Iraq still in the hunt on five.

Japan eye Brazil berth, Cahill calls for high tempo

By Patrick Johnston (Reuters) - Asian champions Japan can become the first side to qualify for the 2014 World Cup with victory in Jordan on Tuesday, while South Korea, Australia and Uzbekistan are odds on to score home wins and clarify the crowded pool picture. The Blue Samurai thrashed Jordan 6-0 at home in June, a result that has helped them establish an eight point lead over Australia, Iraq and Oman in Group B.

Football: Mariners all but give up overhauling Wanderers

Central Coast coach Graham Arnold said Sunday he will rest key players over the final two rounds of Australia's A-League, effectively allowing Western Sydney to finish on top of the standings as he juggles an ongoing AFC Champions League (ACL) campaign. The 1-0 home win over Brisbane Roar on Sunday ensured the Mariners would finish in the top two, guaranteeing them a week off when the post-season playoffs get underway. The Wanderers have all but sealed top spot and with two rounds to play they lead the Mariners by five points.
