Tennis: Federer, Serena target last 32

Roger Federer and Serena Williams bid for French Open last 32 places Wednesday while second seed Victoria Azarenka begins her campaign as Roland Garros plays catch-up after Tuesday's schedule was badly hit by rain. Federer, the 2009 champion and bidding for an 18th major, tackles Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman, the world number 188. Second seed Federer beat Devvarman in their only previous meeting in straight sets in Dubai in 2011.

Tennis: Nadal survives scare, Li into second round

Rafael Nadal's bid for an historic eighth French Open title was almost spectacularly derailed on Monday by big-hitting German Daniel Brands. Defending champion Nadal dropped the opening set of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career before he prevailed 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-3 against a player who had lost all four of his previous matches in Paris. The Spaniard, who before this year had only lost once in 53 matches at Roland Garros, came into the tournament having won six titles in eight finals since he returned from a seventh-month injury lay-off.

French slam drought set to drag on at Roland Garros

By Gregory Blachier and Chrystel Boulet-Euchin PARIS (Reuters) - After 30 years without a male grand-slam winner, France's tennis establishment is beginning to question whether the absence of success is purely down to a lack of natural-born winners. Since Yannick Noah's triumph at the French Open in 1983, France has endured a barren spell at the majors with a shallow talent pool and a lack of mettle in their top players cited as possible reasons.

Federer bounced out of Madrid Masters

Madrid, May 9 (EFE).- Roger Federer came up well short in his bid to defend his title at the Mutua Madrid Open, losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in Thursday's third round to Japan's Kei Nishikori. The Swiss great, who had not played a tournament since mid-March at Indian Wells on hard court, was noticeably rusty during the one-hour, 35-minute match and largely beat himself with unforced errors from the baseline.

Tennis: Djokovic through to Nadal final in Monte Carlo

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on Saturday set up their third final meeting at the Monte Carlo Masters, with the Serb top seed the last obstacle to more clay-court history for Spain's Nadal. Nadal is one win away from a record ninth straight trophy at the Mediterranean venue and has already defeated world number one Djokovic here in 2009 and in 2012. Djokovic had a stress-free semi-final win over Italian Fabio Fognini, crushing the outsider 6-2, 6-1 in 52 minutes.

Rafael Nadal survived one of his toughest claycourt tests to squeeze out a dramatic 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over highly-rated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday. The Spaniard, who has not lost in the principality since 2003, was reluctant to talk about taping on his back, evidence of the wear and tear his return to his beloved clay may be taking after he missed seven months of play with knee problems.
