Liverpool increase Villa's relegation worries

LONDON (Reuters) - Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard struck second-half goals for Liverpool who increased Aston Villa's Premier League relegation fears by recovering from going behind to secure a 2-1 away victory on Sunday. Belgium striker Christian Benteke, with his 14th league goal of the season, fired Villa into a first-half lead but the game changed in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Henderson equalised on 47 minutes and Gerrard scored with a penalty on the hour to leave Villa stuck in the bottom three.

Football: 'Red Devils' rallying point in divided Belgium

The success of their 'Red Devils' is a rare rallying point for football mad Belgium, otherwise deeply divided between its Flemish-speaking north and a Francophone south ahead of general elections next year. Starved of success since reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 1986, a golden generation of players featuring such stars as Eden Hazard, who plays for Chelsea and Manchester City's Vincent Kompany, jointly lead their group with Croatia on the qualifying road to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Football: City skipper Kompany moves to end Mancini row

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has made a bid to end his row with Roberto Mancini by declaring himself fit to return to action this weekend. Kompany infuriated City boss Mancini by playing for Belgium in a World Cup qualifier against Macedonia on Tuesday even though he had been sidelined due to a calf problem for the previous eight weeks. Mancini felt the 26-year-old was risking a recurrence of his injury and warned that players should understand there are some cases that the club is more important than international duty.

Match winner Hazard sparkles for triumphant Belgium

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A moment of magic from Eden Hazard ended stiff resistance from Macedonia on Tuesday as Belgium won 1-0 to remain top of the World Cup Group A qualifying table. The Chelsea winger, three minutes after hitting the bar, feigned a shot before cutting past two defenders to score in the 62nd minute and settle a match his team dominated while rarely threatening to break through. Belgium, with Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany back after a two-month injury layoff, were on top from the start.

Belgium expect fit-again Kompany to start against Macedonia

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgium captain Vincent Kompany is fit again and should start the World Cup qualifier against Macedonia on Tuesday, Belgium coach Marc Wilmots said on Sunday. Wilmots said Kompany, who has been out for two months with a calf injury, had now trained for three days in a row without problems. "I can't say what is going to happen tomorrow, but I expect him to be 100 percent fit," Wilmots told a news conference.

Football: Keshi targets World Cup semis for Nigeria

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi takes his African champions into a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kenya later on Saturday but he has stated he is already eyeing a semi-final spot at next year's World Cup. Keshi led the Super Eagles to win a third Africa Cup of Nations title last month in South Africa, and he said his team will play like champions on Saturday against the Harambee Stars on their way to making World Cup history in Brazil.

Manchester United 15 points clear after City fall at Everton

By Martyn Herman LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester City's fingertip hold on their Premier League title was further loosened when a 2-0 loss at Everton followed by runaway leaders Manchester United's 1-0 win over Reading left them praying for a football miracle. Leon Osman's swerving 32nd-minute shot put Everton in front at a raucous Goodison Park and, although the home side were reduced to 10 men when Steven Pienaar was red-carded for a rash tackle after 61 minutes, City could not reply.
