RugbyU: Sharpe to hone Wallabies forwards for Lions

Australia's most capped forward Nathan Sharpe will lend his weight to the Wallabies coaching set up for the British and Irish Lions June-July tour. Second rower Sharpe never played against the Lions for his country, but he has signed on to help the forwards, a statement said Tuesday ahead of the unveiling of the tourists' squad later in the day. "I'm looking forward to doing all I can to help get the team ready for what is coming," Sharpe said. "It's a once every 12 years opportunity isn't it?

RugbyU: Deans looks to veteran Smith for Lions Tests

Veteran flanker George Smith says it would be an honour to restart his Wallaby career against the touring British and Irish Lions this year after coach Robbie Deans confirmed a recall could happen. The 110-Test veteran, who has been granted a loan extension by his Japanese club until the end of the Super Rugby season, was outstanding as the ACT Brumbies clung on for a 19-19 draw against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Saturday.

RugbyU: Smith cleared by Japan club to stay with Brumbies

Veteran flanker George Smith will remain at the ACT Brumbies after agreement with his Japanese club, opening the way for a possible return to the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions. Originally contracted until the end of next month, Smith has been cleared by Suntory Sungoliath to stay until the Brumbies' final game, including a possible finals campaign in July or August, the club said Thursday. The decision means that Smith will be in Australia when the three-Test series against the Lions is played in June and July.

Cooper out, Folau in for Wallabies camp for Lions

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Code-jumper Israel Folau has been included but controversial flyhalf Quade Cooper omitted from a Wallabies planning camp for the British and Irish Lions tour this weekend, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) confirmed on Friday. Cooper had already told local media of his exclusion from the 30-strong party but coach Robbie Deans said missing the camp did not rule a player out of participation in the three tests against the tourists in June and July.

Cooper says Wallabies exclusion is "no big issue"

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia flyhalf Quade Cooper has no problem with national coach Robbie Deans and his omission from a Wallabies planning camp for the British and Irish Lions series was "no big issue". Cooper, who fell out in spectacular fashion with Deans last year, told local media he had been left out of the 30-strong group being brought together in Sydney this weekend.

Deans relishes making the most of "ultimate" Lions test

By Nick Mulvenney SYDNEY (Reuters) - To say Australia coach Robbie Deans has had a tricky year leading up to the British and Irish Lions series would be something of an understatement. The New Zealander has faced a constant barrage of fire from his many critics, including former Wallabies, previous coaches and even, in the case of flyhalf Quade Cooper, his own players.

RugbyU: No issues with Wallaby coach Deans - Cooper

Quade Cooper said Thursday he has no problems with coach Robbie Deans after his surprise omission from a 30-man Wallabies planning camp ahead of this year's British and Irish Lions series. Cooper was left out of Deans' prospective squad for the three-Test home series in June but he has taken his non-selection on the chin. The 38-Test playmaker played down his omission seven weeks before the official 25-man Wallabies Test squad is named. "It's no big issue really because we have a big season ahead of us," Cooper told Australian Associated Press.

Rugby-Folau on Wallabies radar but no Smith return - Deans

SYDNEY, March 7 (Reuters) - Code-convert Israel Folau could figure for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions later this year but there will be no return for 110-cap flanker George Smith, coach Robbie Deans said on Thursday. Former rugby league international Folau has played just two Super Rugby matches for New South Wales Waratahs at fullback since making the switch from Australian Rules (AFL) but has clearly shown enough potential for Deans.

Rugby-Businessman Pulver new Australia Rugby Union chief

SYDNEY, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Wealthy businessman Bill Pulver was named as the new chief executive of the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) on Wednesday and said his goal was to help the Wallabies become the number one team in the world again. He replaces John O'Neill, who was responsible for the successful organisation of the 2003 Rugby World Cup and stood down early from his second term as chief executive last October.
