Fifth seeded John Isner claimed his sixth career title and first on clay by beating Nicolas Almagro in straight sets in the final of the US Clay Court Championships on Sunday. The hard-serving American blasted seven aces en route to a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Spanish clay court specialist at River Oaks Country Club in Houston. Isner, who was the runner-up in this event last year, went one better this time, being broken just once in the 81-minute match.

"I think I played better than yesterday," said Almagro. "I felt good today. I'm very happy with my game. I tried to be focussed all the time. That's important for me. I tried to play aggressive, and I did it."

Top seed Nicolas Almagro capitalized on all three break point chances as he beat seventh seed Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets to reach the semi-finals of the US Clay Court Championships. Almagro, who has won all 12 of his ATP Tour titles on clay, rolled over the Italian 6-4, 6-4 in their centre court match Friday at the River Oaks Country Club. The 27-year-old Spaniard Almagro blasted nine aces, had one double fault and won 75 percent of his first-serve points in the $455,775 clay court tournament.

Williams, Almagro advance to Houston semis

Houston, Apr 12 (EFE).- American Rhyne Williams became the first semifinalist at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston, rallying from a break down in the third set to defeat Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-4 on Friday. His rival in Saturday's semifinals will be another Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro, who cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 victory Friday afternoon over Italy's Paolo Lorenzi. The 22-year-old Williams, ranked No. 144 in the world, came back from a 0-3 deficit in the third set to reach the semifinals of an ATP Tour-level event for the first time.
