RHP Doug Fister gave up a season-high five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings Sunday in a no-decision against Texas. Fister allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out three. Only once previously this season had Fister yielded more than three runs in a game, when he gave up five runs (four earned) in a May 9 loss at Washington.

New York Mets - PlayerWatch

LHP Scott Rice made his major league-leading 25th appearance, pitching a perfect seventh and eighth inning to help secure the victory. Now 2-3 with a 3.05 ERA, Rice has pitched 20.2 innings and worked two full innings for the second time this season. CF Juan Lagares collected his first major league home run, a game-tying two-run shot with two outs in the seventh innings. He also doubled in the third, marking the first multi-hit game of his career.

Washington Nationals - PlayerWatch

OF Bryce Harper didn't play for the second consecutive game because of a sore left knee. Harper has been ailing since Monday when he crashed into the wall at Dodger Stadium, resulting in him getting 11 stitches in his chin. He played the first two games of the four-game set in San Diego but said the entire left side of his body was still hurting.

Arizona Diamondbacks - PlayerWatch

LHP Wade Miley (3-3) was beaten by the lowly Miami Marlins on Sunday. He went six innings, allowing five hits, one walk and two runs, striking out six. He pitched around one-out doubles by Jeff Mathis in the third and Chris Coghlan in the fifth before the Marlins finally got to him with two runs in the sixth.

Colorado Rockies - PlayerWatch

RHP Juan Nicasio was paired for the first time this season with veteran C Yorvit Torrealba, and the move paid huge dividends. Nicasio limited the Giants to three singles in six innings in the Rockies' 5-0 win. The right-hander got 11 outs on ground balls, struck out five and got two outs on fly balls to the outfield. He threw 89 pitches, 54 for strikes, and allowed three runners to reach second base.

Oakland Athletics - PlayerWatch

RF Yoenis Cespedes entered Sunday batting .198. Manager Bob Melvin, however, had no plans to remove him from the lineup. "He's fine," said the manager. "He's just an aggressive swinger. He's staying, because when he's in the lineup he takes the pressure off everybody. He's so important." He ended up hitting the game-winning homer in the eighth inning Sunday.

Pittsburgh Pirates - PlayerWatch

LHP Jeff Locke won his fourth straight decision as he pitched seven scoreless innings. Locke has not lost since his first start of the season April 7 against the Dodgers at Los Angeles. He has been charged with three earned runs or less in each of last six starts and is 4-0 with a 1.70 ERA in that span.

Baseball: Athletics call up Japanese pitcher Okajima

The Oakland Athletics selected the contract of pitcher Hideki Okajima from minor-league affiliate Sacramento on Friday before their Major League Baseball game against Kansas City. Left-hander Okajima went 0-1 with a 2.16 earned-run average in 14 relief appearances with Sacramento this season. The 37-year-old spent five seasons with the Boston Red Sox from 2007-11 and was a major contributor to Boston's 2007 World Series title run. He went 3-2 with a 2.22 ERA and five saves over 66 appearances that year, earning a spot on the American League All-Star squad.

Baseball: Dazzling Darvish improves to 7-1

Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish of Japan has stretched his Major League Baseball strikeouts lead and improved to 7-1 on the season after an impressive eight-inning effort in downing Detroit. An expected American League showdown with Tigers' ace Justin Verlander never developed as the Detroit hurler lasted only 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing in almost three years, as the Rangers imposed a seven-run third inning Thursday on the way to a 10-4 triumph.
