Pre-orders of new Sonata top 13,000 in eight days

SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's top automaker, said Sunday that pre-sale orders for its new Sonata sedan topped the 13,000 unit mark in eight business days, fanning hopes that demand for mid-sized sedans will grow in the country. The world's fifth-largest automaker said it has received slightly over 13,000 orders for the Sonata LF since March 5 when it started accepting pre-orders. Hyundai said the level of interest shown by local consumers is noteworthy because the purchases are being made without the benefit of government tax breaks.

Hyundai Motor shareholders freeze exec pay, outline goals

SEOUL, March 14 (Yonhap) -- Shareholders of Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's No. 1 carmaker, froze the annual salary of company board members and outside directors in a meeting Friday and approved more than 530 billion won (US$494.73 million) in dividend payments for last year's profits. The flagship company of Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automotive conglomerate, said 1,499 shareholders attended the meeting at its headquarters in southern Seoul and passed a motion reappointing Chung Mong-koo as the company's chairman for three more years.

Underachieving righty to start first game at Kia's new ballpark

SEOUL, March 13 (Yonhap) -- An underachieving right-hander was tabbed Thursday to start the first official game at the new stadium for the Kia Tigers in the top domestic baseball league. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club said Song Eun-beom will start the preseason game against the Doosan Bears on Saturday at the new Gwangju-Kia Champions Field.

Hyundai Motor to begin selling heavy-duty trucks in China this year

BEIJING, March 13 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's top carmaker, said Thursday it will start producing and selling heavy-duty trucks in China this year as it seeks further inroads in the world's biggest auto market. Production of the Trago luxury cargo and dump trucks will begin as early as June at a new commercial vehicle plant in the Chinese city of Ziyuan, Sichuan province, a company official said.

Hyundai Amco inks cooperation pact to build Sri Lankan power plant

SEOUL, March 12 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Amco Co., a South Korean builder with a proven track record in manufacturing plant construction, said Wednesday that it signed a cooperation agreement on building a thermal power plant in Sri Lanka. The deal reached with Sri Lanka Gateway Industries (SLGI) aims to build a 500 megawatt coal-fired plant in Trincomale, some 240 kilometers northeast of Colombo. SLGI has been given a mandate by its government to build the power plant that will cost US$730 million.

Hyundai Motor to launch first battery-powered electric car in 2016

HWASEONG, South Korea (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor Co plans to start selling its first battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) in 2016 as South Korea's champion of fuel-cell cars hedges its bets in next-generation green technology. Hyundai has leant toward engines which turn hydrogen into electricity in response to stricter emissions regulations in markets such as the United States. Research and development partner Kia Motors Corp has focused on rechargeable batteries.
