Sweden pays out first compensation to abused foster kids

Sweden said Friday it had begun paying out 250,000 kronor (30,000 euros, $39,000) in compensation to Swedes who suffered abuse as foster children between 1920 and 1980, after rampant physical and sexual abuse was revealed. A first group of 15 people were granted compensation on Friday. They had all been subjected to "serious forms of abuse or neglect... for example repeated sexual abuse or systematic physical abuse while in an orphanage or foster care," the head of the Swedish state's newly established Compensation Committee, Goeran Ewerloef, said in a statement.

Divorce just as much a hurdle as marriage for US gays

Japan cabinet approves child abduction treaty

Japan moved one step closer to adopting a long-delayed treaty on child abductions on Friday when the cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave its approval, a government spokesman said. The child would be the couple's biologically but Vergara wants a friend to carry the baby because she does not want her career interrupted by a pregnancy, the daily said Friday, citing sources close to the actress. The process is in the "extremely early stages" and the couple will find out in a few weeks if the procedure was successful or not, the paper reported.

Paulina Rubio and "Colate" reach divorce agreement

New York, Mar 6 (EFE).- Mexican singer Paulina Rubio and her ex-husband Nicolas "Colate" Vallejo Najera have arrived at an agreement that will put an end to the legal battle over their divorce and the custody of their child, Andrea Nicolas, People en Español reported Wednesday on its Web page. The magazine also said that the former couple agreed to share custody of their son and that Colate agreed to pay Rubio $243,000 over three years instead of the $1 million she had been demanding as alimony.
