SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) -- The Kia Tigers will be tested over the next month or so in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) as they will be forced to play without their biggest offensive sparkplug. The Tigers, the trendy preseason pick to win it all in 2013, have lost outfielder Kim Joo-chan for six to eight weeks. Kim took a pitch to his left hand in a game against the Hanwha Eagles on Wednesday and X-rays revealed a broken wrist. The team said he will undergo surgery on Friday, a day later than initially scheduled.

Former state-owned monopoly KT was given the stamp of approval at a Korean Baseball Organisation (KBO) general meeting, where owners of the league's other nine teams gave it the edge over conglomerate Booyoung Group.

Winning gold at the Beijing Olympics and finishing runners-up at the 2009 World Baseball Classic boosted baseball's popularity and attendances crossed the 7 million-mark for the first time last year, Yonhap News agency reported.
