WARSAW, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Hurricane Xaver attacked the north coast of Poland with winds of around 100 km per hour and gusts of 130 km per hour, causing five deaths.
After devastating much of western Europe, the icy gales hit Poland in the early hours of Friday morning. The victims include four on the roads when a car and a bus were crushed by falling trees.
The winds wreaked havoc as the hurricane moved south, leaving 400,000 homes, mostly in the northwest of the country, without electricity and some roofs being torn off. The fire brigade was called out around 3,000 times.
