Much to be done before Syria conference

The UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, said Tuesday that much remained to be done to ensure progress at a proposed international conference on the Syrian conflict. "I think that there is a lot of work that needs to be done to make sure that when Geneva takes place, it will produce something constructive," Brahimi said at a meeting for peace mediators in Losby in southeastern Norway. US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov agreed in May to organise a second peace conference in Geneva but no date has yet been set.

Syria conference may be in July, work still to do: Brahimi

GENEVA (Reuters) - A conference on ending the fighting in Syria may now take place in July but there is still a lot of work to do, international envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on Wednesday after preparatory talks with U.S. and Russian officials. "We have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to hold this conference in June. We will be continuing our consultations with Russia and the United States to see about windows of opportunity to hold the conference as soon as possible - hopefully in July," he told reporters in Geneva.

Brahimi says Syria conference possibly in July

GENEVA (Reuters) - A conference on ending the fighting in Syria may possibly be held in July, international envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said after preparatory talks with U.S. and Russian officials on Wednesday. He said the sole sticking point was that the two Syrian sides themselves were not yet ready to commit to the conference. He will chair a second round of preparatory talks on June 25. Brahimi to stay on as Syria envoy after Russia-US bid

Lakhdar Brahimi has withdrawn a threat to resign as UN-Arab League envoy on the Syria conflict after Russia and the United States launched a joint political initiative, officials said Thursday. UN leader Ban Ki-moon "has asked the joint special envoy to stay on and he has accepted to stay on," UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson told reporters, praising the US-Russia effort to organize a conference on the two-year-old conflict.

Ban talks Syria as UN envoy appears set to quit

UN leader Ban Ki-moon discussed deadlocked efforts to end the Syria conflict with the major powers on Thursday amid mounting signs that peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is to quit. Diplomats and UN spokesman Martin Nesirky confirmed the meeting but declined to say whether Brahimi has already told the United Nations and Arab League that he would be leaving. "The decision has been taken, but we don't know when it will be formalized," said one UN diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Diplomats and UN spokesman Martin Nesirky confirmed the meeting but declined to say whether Brahimi has already told the United Nations and Arab League that he would be leaving. A senior aide to the 79-year-old former Algerian foreign minister told AFP no announcement of any resignation was likely to be made until mid-May. Diplomats say however that Brahimi is determined to leave the post.

Brahimi to quit as Syria peace envoy

Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is on the verge of quitting amid growing frustration at deadlocked international efforts to end the worsening conflict, diplomats said Wednesday. Brahimi is "itching to resign but being persuaded to hang on for a few more days," said one UN Security Council diplomat. "He has told everyone that he wants to leave, there is little hope that he will stay," an Arab diplomat at the United Nations told AFP.

Damascus insists Brahimi sever ties with Arab League

Damascus said on Wednesday it will stop cooperating with international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi unless he severs his ties with the Arab League, which it accused of involvement in a conspiracy against Syria. "Syria has cooperated and will cooperate with Brahimi only as UN envoy, because the Arab League is complicit in the conspiracy against Syria," the foreign ministry said in a statement carried by state media. It lashed out at the UN-Arab League envoy and said there was "a lack of neutrality" in his work.

Arab League rejects Ban call to end Syria arms supplies

UN leader Ban Ki-moon appealed Monday for an end to outside arms supplies to rival sides in the Syrian war but the Arab League chief said that would not be possible. Ban pleaded for a halt during talks with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani, whose country has been accused by Damascus of arming Syrian rebels. "The secretary general called for stemming the supply of arms to any side in the Syrian conflict. More arms would only mean more deaths and destruction," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.
