Damascus insists Brahimi sever ties with Arab League

Damascus said on Wednesday it will stop cooperating with international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi unless he severs his ties with the Arab League, which it accused of involvement in a conspiracy against Syria. "Syria has cooperated and will cooperate with Brahimi only as UN envoy, because the Arab League is complicit in the conspiracy against Syria," the foreign ministry said in a statement carried by state media. It lashed out at the UN-Arab League envoy and said there was "a lack of neutrality" in his work.

Arab League rejects Ban call to end Syria arms supplies

UN leader Ban Ki-moon appealed Monday for an end to outside arms supplies to rival sides in the Syrian war but the Arab League chief said that would not be possible. Ban pleaded for a halt during talks with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani, whose country has been accused by Damascus of arming Syrian rebels. "The secretary general called for stemming the supply of arms to any side in the Syrian conflict. More arms would only mean more deaths and destruction," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.

Syria daily slams peace envoy Brahimi

Syrian ruling party mouthpiece Al-Baath daily lashed out at UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Monday, accusing him of "not listening to the Syrian people" and suggesting he may resign soon. The newspaper questioned ongoing support for Brahimi's mission "while discussions over plans for a no-fly zone (in Syria) are being carried out behind the scenes at the UN with the participation of Western countries." "Why should we support Brahimi while the UN and Arab League continue to try and impose one group (the opposition) on the Syrian people?", Al-Baath said.
