World number one Serena Williams got her Madrid Open title defence off to a battling start Sunday, beating Kazakh qualifier Yulia Putintseva 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 but China's Li Na fell at the first hurdle. Putintseva had come through two rounds of qualifying and seemed to handle the warm conditions better early on in an extremely tight first set. Both women broke each other once and Putintseva managed to save another three break points to force the set into a tie-break.

Sharapova makes it 2 titles in a row in Stuttgart

International Sports Desk, Apr 28 (EFE).- Russia's Maria Sharapova defeated China's Li Na 6-4, 6-3 Sunday in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. Sharapova, who also won the tournament last year, needed just 92 minutes to beat Li and take her second title of the season. The Russian, the world No. 2, had been pushed to three sets in her three previous matches but had no problems with Li, the world No. 5. Sharapova won the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, in March.

Defending French Open champion Maria Sharapova claimed the Stuttgart WTA title on Sunday, beating China's Li Na 6-4, 6-3 in just over 90 minutes to get her clay-court season off to a winning start. Having been taken to three-sets in all of her previous three matches here en route to the final, Sharapova saved her best tennis until last to defeat the Chinese in straight sets. She broke Li twice in the first, but the Chinese managed to reply with a break of her own before Sharapova used the first of her three set points to take the first set.

Tennis: Sharapova toils on way to Stuttgart quarters

French Open champion Maria Sharapova admitted she had dug deep to reach the quarter-finals of Stuttgart's WTA tournament after her three-hour marathon victory over claycourt specialist Lucie Safarova on Thursday. Sharapova, who won last year's Stuttgart title en route to her Roland Garros victory, needed three hours, nine minutes to squeeze past her Czech opponent for a 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 second-round victory.

China's Li Na has admitted she has one eye on a brand new sports car, the winner's prize at Stuttgart's WTA tournament, as she prepares to face Petra Kvitova in Friday's quarter-finals. Second-seed Li, who reached January's Australian Open final, breezed through Thursday's second-round match in 74 minutes to see off Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets in her first match of the clay-court season.

World No. 1 Serena Williams reached the semi-finals and British second seed Andy Murray booked a quarter-final berth with straight-set triumphs Tuesday at the WTA and ATP Miami Masters. Williams defeated Chinese fifth seed Li Na 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) while Murray downed Italian 16th seed Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-4 at the $8.5 million hardcourt tournament. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia meets German 15th seed Tommy Haas in a later fourth-round match.
