Greek prime minister to visit China: PM's office

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is to go to China on May 15 for a four-day visit at the invitation of the head of the Chinese government Li Keqiang, the Greek minister's office said on Monday. China has made several big investments in several sectors of the crisis-hit Greek economy in recent years and Samaras wants to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Beijing as part of his drive to lift Greece out of its economic problems.

May Day protests against austerity, 'slave labour'

Tens of thousands of angry protesters staged May Day rallies in several countries of the crisis-wracked eurozone Wednesday, as fury erupted at demonstrations in Bangladesh after a deadly building collapse. Although numbers were lower than in previous years, thousands took to the streets in Spain, some brandishing flags reading "6,202,700" -- a reference to the record number of people out of work in the recession-hit state.

Former Greek PM's mother fights Swiss account claim

The mother of former Greek prime minister George Papandreou has sued financial investigators and three newspapers over claims she held a 550-million-dollar Swiss bank account, a judicial source said Wednesday. Margaret Chadd, 90, accuses the weekly edition of To Vima and scandal-prone Proto Thema and Dimokratia of falsely claiming she held the account, linking her to the so-called Lagarde list scandal.

Greek Communist party leader steps down after 22 years, new chief elected

Greek Communist Party (KKE) leader Aleka Papariga stepped down after 22 years at the post of the Secretary and another party veteran, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, was elected as her successor on Sunday. Papariga, aged 68, became the first female party chief in Greece in 1991 and is one of the longest serving party heads in recent history.

Greece's anti-European communist party, the KKE, elected a new leader replacing veteran female politician Aleka Papariga after her 22-year continuous run, the party announced Sunday. "The new central committee has elected Dimitris Koutsoumbas as general secretary of the KKE committee," the party said in a statement. The 68-year-old Papariga, daughter of communists who resisted Nazi occupation during World War II, is the only woman in Greece to have headed a party for so long.

German woman sought in probe into Greek ex-minister

Greece issued a warrant Thursday for the arrest of a German woman allegedly implicated in money laundering engineered by a Greek ex-minister. Greek judicial authorities requested the arrest of the German former sister-in-law of Akis Tsochatzopoulos after over 1.45 million Swiss francs (1.18 million euros) was found in her bank account, state agency ANA said. Tsochatzopoulos, 73, was sentenced earlier in March to eight years in prison for hiding revenue in the first of a series of trials related to his years in power.

Three Greek ex-ministers charged with tax evasion

A Greek prosecutor has charged three former ministers with failing to properly declare their wealth and revenue in order to avoid tax. The charges laid Wednesday came two days after another ex-minister, Akis Tsochatzopoulos, received an eight-year jail term for hiding his revenue in the first of a series of trials related to his years in power. Tsohatzopoulos, 73, has denied the charges and plans to appeal. The court cases come at a time when Greece is suffering from heavy debt levels and amid tough austerity measures.

French president on symbolic support visit to Greece

French President Francois Hollande began a one-day visit to Greece on Tuesday to express support for the recession-hit country's recovery efforts. Hollande was received with military honours at Athens airport by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. He arrived during a 24-hour strike by Greek media, but state broadcaster NET showed footage of his arrival without journalistic commentary. Hollande will be meeting with Samaras, President Carolos Papoulias and the head of the Greek socialist party, Evangelos Venizelos.
