Greek political parties to testify over bank loans

ATHENS, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Greek prosecutors have ordered the two main ruling parties to testify in an investigation into more than 200 million euros in loans they received from banks, officials said on Friday. The investigation - which is examining whether the loans are legal and whether any wrongdoing was involved - could embarrass the fragile conservative-led government, which relies on aid from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

ATHENS, Jan 10 (Reuters) - A Greek Socialist lawmaker resigned on Thursday from the co-ruling PASOK party after he criticised the government's handling of a list of possible tax cheats, further reducing the fragile coalition's majority in parliament. Christos Aidonis, 50, a former deputy health minister, is the third lawmaker the ruling coalition has lost in less than a week over a deepening scandal that has outraged Greeks and tested the cohesion of the government.

ATHENS, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Greece's parliament will vote on whether to investigate two former prime ministers for failing to take action over a list of possible tax cheats while in office, officials said on Wednesday. The right-wing Independent Greeks party, backed by the far-right Golden Dawn, asked parliament to probe Lucas Papademos, a technocrat, and his Socialist predecessor George Papandreou over the so-called "Lagarde list".
