Judge rules Atlantic Club casino can end contract with PokerStars and seek new buyer

MAYS LANDING, N.J. - After paying an $11 million advance to a struggling Atlantic City casino it intended to buy, the parent company of the world's largest online poker website was left with nothing for its troubles Friday when a judge ruled the casino had the right to scrap the deal. Superior Court Judge Raymond Batten said The Atlantic Club Casino Hotel could terminate the contract it signed with The Rational Group, the British parent company of PokerStars, when the company failed to get New Jersey's preliminary approval by April 26 to own a casino.

Long-delayed Meadowlands mall project could receive up or down vote on Friday

NEWARK, N.J. - A long-delayed megamall project at the Meadowlands sports complex could take another step forward this week. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority announced Wednesday that a vote on the American Dream project could take place at a special board meeting Friday. The authority has to approve a new master plan for the mall, which Gov. Chris Christie has called "an offence to the eyes" because of its exterior, a mishmash of pastel panels visible from the New Jersey Turnpike.

Police end hostage standoff in New Jersey, detain suspect

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - A tense weekend standoff in a South Trenton, New Jersey, neighborhood ended early on Sunday when police took a man into custody after he held several children hostage for about 36 hours. "The hostage situation has been resolved," State Police Sergeant Adam Grossman told Reuters. "The children are safe." Grossman said the suspect was taken into custody at 3:45 a.m. EDT (0745 GMT), but declined to comment on his identity or any other details of the standoff.

Hip hop star Lauryn Hill gets three months for tax evasion

Hill pleaded guilty last year to three counts of failing to file tax returns on more than $1.8 million of income between 2005 and 2007 and faced up to three years in prison.

2 airplanes clip while preparing to take off at NJ's Newark airport; no injuries reported

NEWARK, N.J. - Two airplanes taxiing while preparing for takeoff at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday night clipped each other, authorities said. No one was injured when the planes touched around 7:30 p.m. at one of the nation's busiest airports, Federal Aviation Administration officials said. A Scandinavian Airlines plane's left wing clipped the tail of a United Airlines plane while they were on a taxiway.

Storm-damaged Statue of Liberty to reopen by July 4

The Statue of Liberty will reopen by July 4 once repairs to extensive damage inflicted on the New York landmark by Hurricane Sandy are completed, US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Tuesday. The statue itself, a 19th century gift from France to the United States, weathered the October 29 storm, but serious damage was wrought on ferry docks, energy infrastructure and security screening system on Liberty Island.

Key US Democrat under grand jury probe: report

Prostitute admits fake claims against US senator: report

A prostitute who triggered a political scandal by claiming US Senator Robert Menendez paid her for sex has admitted she made up the allegations, the Washington Post reported on Monday. The Post report said the escort had told police in her native Dominican Republic that she had been paid to fabricate claims against the Democratic lawmaker, who is the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The report cited court documents and two people briefed on the issue as saying the woman admitted she had never met or seen Menendez before.

Ongoing repairs keep Statue of Liberty closed

Damage wreaked on the Statue of Liberty by Hurricane Sandy has yet to be fully repaired, and it remains unclear when the New York icon will again welcome tourists from around the world. "We do not have a reopening timeline yet," said spokeswoman Linda Friar of the National Park Service, the US government agency that oversees the statue and the small island in New York harbor on which it stands. "There is still a lot of work yet to be done," she told AFP.
