Soccer-Mali bank on Keita to deliver first World Cup place

By Mark Gleeson PORT ELIZABETH, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Mali are banking on midfield maestro Seydou Keita to stick around for a while so that he can help them to secure a place in the World Cup finals for the first time. Coach Patrice Carteron said the influential 33-year-old had spurred Mali to finish third at the African Nations Cup and his presence would inspire the rest of the team as they chase a place in Brazil 2014.

Mali also beat Ghana in the same playoff match at the last edition in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon a year ago. Samassa put his team in front in the 21st minute with a diving header following a good pass from Adama Tamboura on the left.

Football: Mali recall Samassa, drop shootout star Diakite

Mali have dropped penalty shootout star Soumaila Diakite for Wednesday's Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Nigeria. Mali coach Patrice Carteron said France-based goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa will start ahead of the more experienced Diakite, from Bamako club Stade Malien, who saved two penalties in the quarter-final triumph over South Africa. Guingamp goalkeeper Samassa missed the South Africa game last Saturday because of a one-match ban after picking up two bookings in the group stage.
