Darfur tribal fighting 'killed 510' in 7 weeks

More than 500 members of an Arab tribe in Sudan's war-ravaged Darfur region have been killed and almost 900 wounded in seven weeks of clashes, an MP representing the district said on Monday. The toll is far higher than figures previously given for the fighting between the Rezeigat tribe and rival Arabs from the Beni Hussein group in the Jebel Amir gold mining area of North Darfur. Aid workers say the fighting has caused the region's largest uprooting of the population in years.

Sudan border dispute endangers millions of cattle: nomads

Millions of migrating cows are at risk of death on the Sudan-South Sudan border, nomads warned on Thursday, because the two nations have failed to open the frontier as agreed several months ago. The cattle have fallen victim to the inability of Sudan and South Sudan to implement key security and economic agreements which their presidents signed in September. The leaders had hailed the pacts, which called for a reopening of border points, following a March-April war on the undemarcated frontier.

Heavy fighting between tribes over gold mine in Sudan's Darfur

By Khalid Abdelaziz KHARTOUM, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Heavy fighting has broken out between two tribes over a gold mine in Sudan's Darfur region, killing several people and forcing authorities to close the mine, tribal leaders and state media said on Wednesday. Law and order has collapsed in most parts of Darfur, an arid region in Sudan's west, since mainly non-Arab tribes took up arms in 2003 against the government in Khartoum, which they accuse of oppressive policies.
