Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa saved two penalties Sunday as 10-man Orlando Pirates held on to qualify for the CAF Champions League group phase. The South African club lost 1-0 away to TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in a clash of former title-holders, but squeezed into the last eight 3-2 on aggregate. Multiple African football title winners Zamalek of Egypt are facing a fight for CAF Champions League survival after being held 1-1 by Saint George of Ethiopia in Cairo this weekend. Zamalek have won the Champions League five times, the Super Cup three times and the Cup Winners Cup once, making them the second most successful club in African football after 16-trophy neighbours Al-Ahly.

Football: Grieving Congolese suffer CAF Cup defeat

The grieving footballers of Daring Club Motema Pembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup at the weekend. Motema Pembe lost 2-0 away to Lydia Ludic Academic of Burundi in Bujumbura to go out of the second-tier African club championship 2-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg at home by a solitary goal last month. The return game was delayed one week because three of the Motema Pembe squad -- goalkeeper Guelord Dibulana, midfielder Hugues Muyenge and striker Mwanza Lemba -- were killed in a Kinshasa road accident.
