Insurgents kill two rebel chiefs in Sudan's Darfur

Two Darfur rebel chiefs who signed an accord with the Sudanese government have been killed in an insurgent attack near the strife-torn region's border with Chad, the foreign ministry said on Monday. "The forces of the Revolutionary Front carried out an odious terrorist operation on Sunday, murdering in cold blood the two leaders Mohammed Bashar and Arko Dahiya" who "were on a peaceful mission in the Yamna region on the border with Chad," it said in a statement.

Six days earlier, hundreds of insurgents had stormed in, spraying bullets and killing up to 13 civilians and soldiers, before pulling out as government planes started flying overhead.

100 dead, rescuers trapped in collapsed Darfur mine

Around 100 miners are estimated to have died inside a collapsed gold mine in Sudan's Darfur region and nine rescuers trying to free them are now trapped, a miner said on Friday. "Nine of the rescue team disappeared when the land collapsed around them yesterday (Thursday)," said the miner, who had visited the scene and asked to remain anonymous. On Monday the unlicensed desert gold mine began to collapse in Jebel Amir district, more than 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of the North Darfur state capital El Fasher.

More than 130 people have been killed in the latest outbreak of tribal fighting in western Sudan's Darfur region, a tribal leader said on Friday. "Fighting was going on until last night and from our side we have 37 dead," said the leader of the Beni Halba tribe, who claimed that more than 100 members of the rival Gimir group were also killed. A Gimir official could not immediately be reached for comment.

Sudan rebels widen offensive, 'attack five areas'

Sudanese rebels said they attacked five areas in North and South Kordofan states on Saturday, widening an anti-government offensive in one of their most audacious acts in years. "This is a significant shift in the war in Sudan," Abdel Wahid Mohammed al-Nur, who heads a faction of Darfur's Sudan Liberation Army, told AFP. "We are heading to Khartoum," he said. "This is not a joke." Residents of Umm Rawaba, the second-largest town in North Kordofan, said rebels arrived Saturday morning on at least 20 vehicles for a brief occupation.

Sudanese rebels swept through a major town in North Kordofan state, residents said on Saturday, widening an anti-government offensive in one of the insurgents' most audacious acts in years. North Kordofan has been largely free from the rebel activity taking place in the Darfur region to its west, and South Kordofan to its south. "This is part of our strategy to overthrow the regime and we want to weaken the troops on the road towards Khartoum," said Gibril Adam Bilal, spokesman for Darfur's Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) which is part of a rebel coalition.

Food, water reach war-displaced in Sudan's Darfur

Food, water and medical aid has reached thousands of people displaced by fighting in southern Darfur in Sudan, peacekeepers said on Wednesday, after the UN chief expressed concern over restrictions on access. Almost 80 tonnes of "critical humanitarian aid" will assist needy civilians in Labado and Muhagiriya, said the African Union-UN peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) which delivered the supplies from United Nations agencies.

"The defence of Mr Saleh Mohammed Jerbo Jamus hereby notifies the trial chamber, with great sadness... that Mr Jerbo died in North Darfur, Sudan on the afternoon of 19 April 2013, and was buried the same day," said an ICC document published late Tuesday.
