Football: Nigeria to train in Houston for World Cup

African champions Nigeria will train in Houston in the United States for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a top official has announced. Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi had proposed the team train in either Miami or Houston for the World Cup, but top Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official Chris Green said the country had settled on the Texas city. "Nigeria will train for the World Cup in Houston," said Green, chairman of the NFF technical committee. "We want to make a statement at our fifth World Cup and so we have to prepare adequately."

Football: Nigeria slams CAF player of the year vote

Top Nigerian officials on Friday criticised the procedure used to determine the CAF African Player of the Year after John Obi Mikel lost out to Ivorian star Yaya Toure. The national team coaches of the 54 member countries vote for 10 nominated players on a scale of one to 10 points, with the highest score signifying their top pick. Manchester City midfielder Toure collected 373 points and was voted by 28 national team coaches as their top pick for the past year, making it a hat-trick of wins after success in 2011 and 2012.

Football: Clattenburg cleared by FA after Saints complaint

Referee Mark Clattenburg was on Monday cleared of misconduct by the Football Association (FA) following a complaint from Southampton about his alleged comments to England midfielder Adam Lallana. Saints had complained about critical comments allegedly made by Clattenburg to Lallana during Southampton's defeat at Everton in December.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi said on Monday that Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel deserved to be named Africa's best player of 2013. Mikel is in the running for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) award with Ivorian stars Yaya Toure, of Manchester City, and Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Nigeria's financial capital, Lagos, on Thursday.

"The matches are always complicated and difficult," said Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri. "Ajaccio played very deep but I saw that we had a desire to win. I am satisfied with three points."
