Football: Nigeria unchanged for Ethiopia World Cup clash

Nigeria have named an unchanged squad from a recent qualifier at home to Malawi for next month's World Cup play-off in Ethiopia. The African champions will be away to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on Saturday, October 12, while the return leg will be played at U. J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Saturday, November 16. John Obi Mikel, Vincent Enyeama, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike all return for the clash in Ethiopia. Five players from the local league also made the 23-man squad.

Football: Nigeria coach calls up 42-player squad for WC qualifier

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has called up a total of 42 players made up of 24 from the local league and 18 from overseas for a World Cup qualifier against Malawi next month. Only five of the 24 players from the domestic championship will eventually join the 18 overseas-based stars for the qualiifer, as well as for a friendly against Burkina Faso in Kaduna on September 10. Goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, defenders Azubuike Egwuekwe, Solomon Kwambe and Benjamin Francis, as well as midfielders Sunday Mba and forward Gambo Mohammed headline the locally-based contingent.

Football: Moses, Ameobi return for Nigeria

Nigeria have recalled Chelsea's Victor Moses and Shola Ameobi of Newcastle United for next month's friendly against South Africa in Durban. Moses returns after injury forced him out of the Confederations Cup in Brazil. Ameobi was not at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa after he made his long-awaited debut for Nigeria in November in a friendly against Venezuela in the United States of America.

Football: Spain stars return against Nigeria

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque brought his first-choice players back into his starting line-up for his side's final Confederations Cup Group B game against Nigeria at Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza on Sunday. As he had announced in his pre-game press conference, the 10 players who started the opening 2-1 win over Uruguay returned to the team, but Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes was picked in goal instead of Iker Casillas.

Football: Nigeria 'not scared' of Spain, says Enyeama

Nigeria captain Vincent Enyeama said Saturday that his side will take to the field with no fear when they tackle world and European champions Spain in their make-or-break match at the Confederations Cup. Nigeria go into Sunday's game level on points with Uruguay in Group B, but with the South American champions expected to comfortably beat minnows Tahiti, Nigeria will probably have to overcome the group leaders to stand any chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Football: Forlan keeps Uruguay alive as Nigeria downed

Uruguay striker Diego Forlan celebrated his record 100th appearance by scoring the winner as the South Americans beat Nigeria 2-1 to keep their Confederations Cup hopes alive here Thursday. Forlan lashed home a thunderous strike on 51 minutes to reignite Uruguay's hopes of reaching the semi-finals from Group B following their opening defeat against world champions Spain on Sunday. Uruguay had taken the lead through defender Diego Lugano in the 19th minute before Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel equalised for the Super Eagles with a rare goal on 37 minutes. bur/rcw
