Tennis: Ferrer loses title in shock first-round exit

Spaniard David Ferrer failed to get back on the winning track on his return after losing in the French Open final as he lost his 's-Hertogenbosch ATP title on Tuesday, going down 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to veteran Belgian Xavier Malisse in the first round. Ferrer, who lost in straight sets to compatriot Rafael Nadal in the final at Roland Garros 10 days ago, admitted that he had not had the best training for the match as he had practised on hard courts last week back in Spain.

Familiar ending concludes Rafa's journey back

By Martyn Herman PARIS (Reuters) - It was a familiar routine, a rasping forehand winner, a joyful backwards fall to the dirt in celebration then sinking his milky white into the Musketeers' Cup, but Rafa Nadal's romp to an eighth French Open title felt extra special on Sunday. Not because the level of his tennis in a routine 6-3 6-2 6-3 win over grand slam final debutant, fellow Spaniard and friend David Ferrer scaled the heights of Friday's seismic semi-final victory over world number one Novak Djokovic.

Tennis: Weather gods unkind to Ferrer

David Ferrer took one look at the weather in Paris on Sunday morning and knew right away that his already slim chances of upsetting Rafael Nadal in the French Open final had just got slimmer. Rain and unseasonally cold temperatures in the French capital were the last thing the 31-year-old Spaniard wanted to see for his first Grand Slam final in what was his 42nd attempt. His intuition proved to be spot on as he lost 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to a player he considers to be a close friend, but a merciless adversary on court.
