The world No. 2, who has not lost a match since his defeat to top-ranked Rafael Nadal in last year's U.S. Open final, took a two-set lead in just over an hour on the strength of strong serving and efficient use of his break points. Through sets one and two, Djokovic won 36 of his 46 serve points and coverted all three of his break-point opportunities.

Djokovic was focused from the start, no doubt eager to avoid a long match in brutally hot conditions on Rod Laver Arena. Mayer's serve posed no threat early on to the Serbian world No. 2, who had a perfect conversion rate on break points en route to a first-set "bagel." For the set, the Argentine won just four of his 17 service points.
