Rome, May 17 (EFE).- Czech Tomas Berdych pulled off a shocking comeback Friday against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters, turning what seemed a certain lopsided loss into a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win. Djokovic, who cruised through his first two matches of the tournament and led Berdych 6-2, 5-2, saw the momentum of the match change in an instant against his big-hitting opponent. The Serbian broke Berdych's serve in the fourth game of the match en route to an easy first set victory.

Djokovic cruises into Rome quarters

Rome, May 16 (EFE).- Serbia's Novak Djokovic breezed into the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters on Thursday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov. Djokovic's return of Dolgopolov's first serve was the difference, as the Ukrainian only managed to win 53 percent of those points en route to surrendering his serve on three occasions. The Serbian world No. 1, meanwhile, staved off all three break points he faced and won 72 percent of his service points.

Tennis: Nadal to face Wawrinka for Madrid title

Rafael Nadal reached a seventh consecutive final since returning from a seven-month injury layoff with 6-0, 6-4 win over compatriot Pablo Andujar at the Madrid Masters on Saturday. The 26-year-old will next face Stanislas Wawrinka who beat Tomas Berdych 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. World number 113 Andujar was blown away in the opening set, winning just nine points, as Nadal broke three times to take it 6-0. Victory extended Nadal's incredible run to 31-2 since returning from the tendinitis problem in his knee.

Tennis: Murray ousted by Berdych in Madrid

Andy Murray became the latest big name to fall at the Madrid Masters as he was beaten by sixth seed Tomas Berdych 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Friday. The world number three paid for his gruelling encounter Gilles Simon less than 24 hours earlier as he lacked the requisite energy to cope with the Czech who moves on to face either Jo-Wilfred Tsonga or Stanislas Wawrinka in the semi-finals. It was the Spanish world number five's fifth title since he returned from a seven-month injury layoff in February and was more evidence that his troublesome knees are not about to bring his career to a premature end.

Rafael Nadal led the way with a 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 defeat of Frenchman Benoit Paire on Friday, as the Barcelona Open completed rain-delayed matches from the previous 24 hours and prepared to start the quarter-finals. Nadal, the seven-time champion seeded second, dropped his opening service game against the unpredictable Paire, ranked a career-best 33rd with the Spaniard finding himself trailing 2-0 on the clay of the Real Club de Tenis.

Nadal faces busy Friday after rain hits Barcelona Open

(Reuters) - Rafael Nadal may have to play two matches at the Barcelona Open on Friday after his third round clash against Frenchman Benoit Paire was postponed by rain on Thursday. The world number five and second seed, gunning for an eighth Barcelona title, will face Paire at 9:30 a.m. British time on Friday with either sixth seed Kei Nishikori or Albert Ramos waiting in the next round should Nadal avoid an upset.
