Tesco profit fall to reflect cost of fightback

By James Davey LONDON (Reuters) - Tesco <TSCO.L>, Britain's biggest retailer, is expected to report its first fall in underlying annual profit in two decades, reflecting the cost of a turnaround plan launched after last year's shock profit warning. The group, the world's third largest retailer after Wal-Mart <WMT.N> and Carrefour <CARR.PA>, was one of Britain's most consistent companies in terms of earnings growth until it issued the profit alert in January 2012.

The European Commission on Monday cleared US-based cable operator Liberty Global to acquire Britain's Virgin Media in a deal worth 17.2 billion euros. The Commission said the tie up between Liberty Global, the largest cable operator in Europe, and the second largest pay TV firm in Britain "would not raise competition concerns" because of the nature of the business and the continued competition the new entity would face.

Liberty Global's $15.8 billion Virgin Media deal cleared in EU

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. cable firm Liberty Global <LBTYA.O> won unconditional EU regulatory approval on Monday for its $15.8 billion (10.3 billion pounds) takeover of Virgin Media <VMED.O>, a deal that pits the group against Rupert Murdoch's British satellite TV operation BSkyB <BSY.L>. The European Commission said it did not have any competition concerns regarding the takeover, confirming a Reuters report last week.

Jaguar Land Rover posts record sales for March

British luxury car brand Jaguar Land Rover, owned by India's Tata Motors, Wednesday said global sales in March climbed 16 percent from a year earlier to hit a record level, boosted by Chinese demand. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) reported sales in March rose to 53,772 units internationally, with sales for the January to March quarter also at a record high of 115,504 units. JLR sales in China for March rose 22 percent to 8,487 vehicles while in Britain they grew 14 percent to 17,784 units, the statement said.

March 6 (Reuters) - International Airlines Group (IAG) said the pay of its chief executive, Willie Walsh, fell below that of the boss of its British Airways unit last year after IAG's board decided not to award Walsh a bonus. Walsh's pay and benefits fell 16.6 percent to 1.1 million pounds ($1.66 million) for last year after IAG as a whole reported a steep loss, while the package for BA chief Keith Williams rose 40 percent to 1.4 million pounds due to the British carrier's robust performance, according to IAG's annual report.

Tesco plans targeted advertising with launch of free TV service

LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, on Wednesday launched Clubcard TV, an online video service that targets holders of its loyalty card with advertising as they watch free movies and TV shows. The service, free to the grocer's 16 million Clubcard holders, is consistent with Tesco's strategy to personalise its promotional and marketing activity, which the company said helped it to post its highest sales growth in three years over Christmas.
