Racing: Ladbrokes refunds bets on Al Zarooni horses

Leading bookmaker Ladbrokes said on Tuesday it had refunded bets on some of the horses which tested positive for banned steroids. Ladbrokes said it had refunded £200,000 ($305,000, 235,000 euros) of ante post stakes on horses in the care of Classic-winning Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni following what it called "exceptional circumstances". The horses concerned were the unbeaten filly Certify, Desert Blossom, Artigiano and Restraint of Trade.

Ladbrokes warns on profits after poor racing run

By Keith Weir LONDON (Reuters) - Ladbrokes <LAD.L>, Britain's second largest bookmaker, warned investors it expected annual operating profit to fall this year after a poor performance from horse racing and online gaming in the first quarter. Ladbrokes shares fell eight percent after the unscheduled trading statement, which dashed expectations that the company was turning itself around after problems with its online operations last year.

GVC plans big cuts to Sportingbet cost base

Some of the 200 people employed by Sportingbet in its London office will lose their jobs and the new owners are also unlikely to renew a shirt sponsorship deal with English second tier football club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ghana's Turkson is Irish bookmakers' favourite for new pope

LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Ghana's Peter Turkson is the Irish bookmakers' favourite to replace Pope Benedict, putting a non-European in pole position to lead the 1.2 billion-member Roman Catholic Church for the first time in more than a millennium. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power offered odds of 11/4 against for Turkson, meaning successful punters would win 11 pounds for every four staked, while Britain's second largest bookmaker Ladbrokes offered odds of 5/2 against.

Football: Bookmakers pay out early on United winning title

Rival betting firms Betfred and Paddy Power have seen enough of the Premier League race to take the gamble of paying out early on Manchester United winning the title, despite the fact there are still 12 matches to play. Betfred boss Fred Done has risked facing the wrath of his fellow United supporters, paying out early again despite twice having his fingers burnt by making such a move before, including when Alex Ferguson's side were overhauled by neighbours City in the dying minutes of last season.

UPDATE 1-Rank mulls future of Blue Square online brand

LONDON, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Gambling firm Rank Group Plc is reviewing its loss-making online sports betting business Blue Square as it seeks to focus on its casinos brands, the company said on Thursday. "The (Blue Square Bet) business operates solely in the digital channel of the highly competitive sports betting market where it continues to generate an operating loss," Rank said in a statement.
