Kenya, which is to hold general elections on March 4, has been ruled by President Mwai Kibaki since 2002.
GEOGRAPHY: Situated in east Africa on the Indian Ocean, Kenya has an area of 582,680 square kilometres (224,914 square miles) and straddles the Equator.
It has borders with Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan and Ethiopia to the north, and Somalia to the north-east. The terrain ranges from semi-desert to fertile river valleys.
