Man pleads guilty to five charges in Nova Scotia confinement case

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. - A 48-year-old man pleaded guilty Thursday to kidnapping, confining and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy at a cabin in rural Nova Scotia last fall. David James LeBlanc appeared in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Bridgewater, where he entered guilty pleas to charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, uttering threats and breach of conditions. Two other charges — sexual assault causing bodily harm and administering a noxious substance with intent to cause bodily harm — were withdrawn.

Panel urges tougher U.S. response to trade secret theft

Calif. doctor who promised fake herbal cancer cure sentenced to 14 years in prison

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A Los Angeles doctor was sentenced Friday to 14 years in federal prison for bilking patients out of more than $1 million by promising them that an herbal supplement she hawked could cure late-stage cancer and other diseases. U.S. District Judge Robert Timilin also ordered Dr. Christine Daniel to forfeit $1,277,083. Daniel, 58, was found guilty of 11 counts, including wire fraud, tax evasion and witness tampering in September 2011.

Jury convicts 5 people of selling worthless stock in Kansas City company to enrich themselves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A jury on Wednesday convicted the founder of a Kansas City company and four associates of cheating investors by selling them millions of dollars of worthless stock and spending the money on themselves. Petro America Corp. founder Isreal Owen and his associates were accused of illegally selling unregistered stock in Petro America from 2008 through 2010, much of it to poor investors. Prosecutors said investors were told the company had $284 billion in assets and that they'd be rich once it went public.

Nicaragua extradites US man wanted in Florida as part of alleged $137 million stock fraud

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Nicaraguan authorities say they have deported a U.S. man wanted for fraud and money laundering in his home country. Interior Minister Ana Morales says Lawrence Hartman was deported to Florida on Wednesday. She says the 47-year-old lawyer was detained April 25 when he tried to get a Nicaraguan passport using a fraudulent birth certificate. U.S. prosecutors say Hartman is one of seven people charged in Tampa, Florida, with operating an investment fraud scheme that bilked investors out of at least $137 million.

US judge in Ore. dismisses movie pirating lawsuit, calling it unfair 'reverse class-action'

MEDFORD, Ore. - A federal judge has dismissed a movie company's Internet piracy complaint against 34 Oregonians, saying the company was unfairly using the court's subpoena power in a "reverse class-action suit" to save on legal expenses and possibly to intimidate defendants into paying thousands of dollars for viewing a movie that can be bought or rented for less than $10. The suit involves the 2012 movie "Maximum Conviction" starring Steven Seagal and Steve Austin, the Medford Mail Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/15JnmQd ).

Guinea indicts gendarme for rape in 2009 stadium massacre

CONAKRY (Reuters) - Guinea has indicted a gendarme officer on rape charges related to a stadium massacre of pro-democracy protesters by forces linked to the military junta in September 2009. Rights groups have criticized President Alpha Conde, elected in 2010 in Guinea's first democratic handover of power since independence from France in 1958, for not moving fast enough to bring those responsible to justice.

Figures confirm immigrants' economic importance for Arizona

Phoenix, May 9 (EFE).- The state of Arizona would lose $48.8 billion in economic activity and 581,000 jobs if all the undocumented immigrants left the state, according to figures released Thursday. It is estimated that there are approximately 400,000 undocumented immigrants living in the state, a figure that represents 6 percent of the population, according to a report by the Washington-based Immigration Policy Center. In Arizona, Latinos and Asians together represent 32.8 percent of the total population and one-third of them are naturalized citizens.

Survey: Majority support changes to immigration system

Washington, May 9 (EFE).- Three-quarters of U.S. residents believe that the immigration system needs major changes, including a path toward legalizing the status of the undocumented population, according to a national survey released Thursday by the Pew Research Center. Of the more than 1,500 people surveyed by Pew early this month, 35 percent said the immigration system should be "completely rebuilt."
