High unemployment and income inequalities undermining public trust: OECD head

MONTREAL - High unemployment and growing income inequalities have undermined public confidence in global institutions, the head of the one of the world's leading economic think-tanks said Monday. "Today we have lost the trust in government, we have lost the trust in political parties...in everything that we built as a society for 100 years and now there's an enormous degree of cynicism," Angel Gurria told an economic conference in Montreal.

Tennis: French Open final hit by same-sex marriage protest

The French Open men's final was held up by a flare-carrying protestor on Sunday, who came within just a few feet of defending champion Rafael Nadal to demonstrate against France's same-sex marriage law. The match between Nadal and David Ferrer was in the second set when a shirtless spectator, wearing a white mask, leapt from the stands and onto the court before he was wrestled away by security officials. The match was briefly halted with Nadal even taking the time to shake the hand of the burly security guard who had sprinted into the playing arena to protect him.

Tennis: Mattek-Sands, girl from Neenah who drove Li Gaga

She's the girl from Neenah, Wisconsin, who sports garish leopard print dresses, knee-high football socks and cowboy hats on court while slapping thick, black paint beneath her eyes. Brash American Bethanie Mattek-Sands is the self-styled Lady Gaga of tennis and on Thursday at a rain-deluged French Open, she sent Chinese star Li Na completely loco. Mattek-Sands, who hails from America's Midwest, but lives in Arizona with her accountant husband, stunned the 2011 champion, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the third round at Roland Garros and add a little colour to a drab Paris day.

Mexico's economy will grow at faster clip in 2014, OECD says

Paris, May 29 (EFE).- Mexico's economy, which will experience slower growth in the first half of 2013 due to headwinds from the United States, will have a stronger performance next year, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD, said Wednesday. The new government's structural reforms in the areas of telecommunications, energy and budgeting will improve long-term growth prospects, the OECD said.

History holds lesson for Serena ahead of second-round match

By Julien Pretot PARIS (Reuters) - If Serena Williams expects a walk in the park at the French Open on Wednesday, a simple look at her second-round opponent's CV should set her straight. French teenager Caroline Garcia pushed current champion Maria Sharapova to the brink at Roland Garros two years ago, leading by a set and 4-1, and she is confident of her chances against the world number one.
