Suicide car bomber kills 15 in central Damascus

By Oliver Holmes and Mariam Karouny BEIRUT (Reuters) - A suicide car bomb killed at least 15 people and wounded 53 in the main business district of Damascus on Monday in what the Syrian prime minister said was a response to army gains against rebels around the capital. The bomb near a school in the Sabaa Bahrat district, which also houses the Central Bank and Finance Ministry, set cars ablaze and damaged buildings, state television footage showed.

Fierce battles in two Damascus districts

Fighting between Syria's rebels and loyalist troops raged in two Damascus neighbourhoods on Tuesday while shelling of a village near the capital left four members of a family dead, a watchdog said. "Fierce battles broke out in the Barzeh district of northern Damascus. Shelling in the area wounded five people and caused material damage," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a broad network of activists, doctors and lawyers for its reporting.

Residents flee shelling in Damascus district: NGO

Syrian regime forces pounded parts of Damascus during the night, sending residents fleeing from the northern Barzeh district, as fighting also raged in the northern city of Aleppo, a watchdog said Saturday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime shelling continued on Saturday and also affected the Palestinian Yarmuk refugee camp along with the Jubar, Barzeh and Qaboon neighbourhoods of Damascus. The shelling was particularly fierce in Barzeh, the watchdog said, adding that snipers were deployed in the district as residents were reported fleeing the area.

At least three civilians were killed and 28 others wounded on Monday when mortar shells slammed into a neighbourhood in southern Damascus, Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported. "A mortar shell fired by terrorists fell behind a shop on Duwaliya road, killing three civilians and wounding 28 others," SANA said, adding that another shell slammed into nearby Bab Sharqi district causing further casualties. A third shell struck a house in the same district.
