Limited US arms to Syria unlikely to harm Israel

US plans to arm Syrian rebels have raised fears in Israel that the weapons could fall into the wrong hands, but analysts played down the threat -- provided no big guns are involved. Washington said last week that it would provide Syria's rebels with military support in the form of small arms after it determined that the Syrian regime had used chemical weapons. US President Barack Obama on Wednesday declined to categorise the arms the US will send to the rebels.

Lebanese Sunni Muslim politician warns of state collapse

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's main Sunni Muslim political party pleaded with the presidency on Tuesday to prevent "state collapse", blaming the Shi'ite Hezbollah group for dragging the country into the war in neighboring Syria. Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah militants are openly fighting for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he battles a 27-month-old Sunni-led revolt. Inter-communal violence has spread to religiously-mixed Lebanese cities and border towns.

From boy scout musician to Syria 'martyr'

For years, Maher Sukkar, a Palestinian living in Lebanon, belonged to a boy scout troupe and played music. No one expected him to join the radical Al-Nusra Front and die fighting in Syria. "I'm sad and shocked," says Mohammed, who spent 10 years in the scouts with Sukkar. "I never knew him to be an extremist," his friend adds. "Most of our scout team members were conservative Muslims. But Maher was the only one who would smoke and swear during (the fasting month of) Ramadan."

Hamas calls on Hezbollah to pull fighters out of Syria

GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement on Monday urged Lebanese militant group Hezbollah to withdraw its forces from Syria, where they are battling for President Bashar al-Assad, and focus on fighting Israel instead. Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, was once an Assad ally but last year endorsed the revolt against him in a shift that at the time deprived the Syrian leader of an important Sunni Muslim supporter in the Arab world.

Gunmen kill 3 Lebanon Shiites, Turk: security source

Gunmen killed three Lebanese Shiites and a Turk on Sunday in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, a security source said, revising an earlier toll breakdown, as the conflict in neighbouring Syria raised fresh tensions. The unidentified assailants shot dead "two members of the Jaafar family, an Amhaz family member and a Turk" in an ambush while they were smuggling fuel through the Qaa area, he told AFP, asking not to be named. He had initially identified the victims as four Lebanese and said a fifth man was seriously wounded.

Iran's Rowhani 'beacon of hope'

Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, a close ally of Tehran, welcomed the election of Hassan Rowhani as Iran's new president on Sunday, calling him a "beacon of hope". "The Arab and Muslim people... who have always seen the Islamic republic as a supporter of the oppressed... and every fighter who resists for God, consider you today a beacon of hope," the group said. Rowhani, a cleric viewed as a moderate political figure, was declared the winner of Iran's presidential election on Saturday.

Hezbollah will stay involved in Syria war: Nasrallah

Lebanon's Shiite movement Hezbollah will stay involved in the Syrian conflict, after having helped government forces recapture the key town of Qusayr from rebels, its leader Hassan Nasrallah said Friday. "Before Qusayr is the same as after Qusayr. Nothing has changed," he said in a televised speech. "Isn't the conspiracy the same?... Have the facts changed? On the contrary, the other side is stirring up this conflict even more," said the leader of the powerful Iranian-backed group.
