Football: Founder members to kick off new season - league

The English Football League is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its first season (1888/89) with a programme of special anniversary league fixtures. The six matches - two in each division - will feature a number of the founder members of the world's original league football competition, as well as other pairings of historical significance. The games are to be played on the opening weekend of the 2013/14 campaign.

Football: Jackett appointed Wolves manager

Fading English giants Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday announced that they have appointed former Millwall manager Kenny Jackett as their new head coach. The 51-year-old succeeds fellow Welshman Dean Saunders, who was sacked after Wolves were relegated to third-tier League One earlier this month. Jackett stepped down from his role at Millwall on the same day. "I am both proud and delighted to have been appointed head coach at Wolves, and am really looking forward to the challenge ahead," Jackett told the Wolves website.

His departure, by mutual consent, was widely anticipated following his talks earlier in the day with Stoke chairman Peter Coates. "Stoke City and Tony Pulis confirm that they have mutually agreed that Tony will leave the club with immediate effect," the Potters confirmed in a statement.

CORRECTED: Football: Dickov hired as Doncaster boss

Former Manchester City and Arsenal striker Paul Dickov was appointed manager of newly-promoted Championship club Doncaster Rovers on Monday. Rovers had been searching for a new boss since Brian Flynn returned to his post as the club's director of football just days after leading them to the League One title with a dramatic last-day victory at Brentford. Dickov, who began his career at Arsenal and played for City from 1996 to 2002, had been out of work since resigning as manager of League One side Oldham in February.

Football: Villa Park in line for third-place play-off

The Premier League announced on Friday that Villa Park will host a third-place play-off between Chelsea and Arsenal on May 26 if the two sides cannot be separated in the table. The play-off will only take place if, after their final games of the season on Sunday, the two teams are level on points, goal difference and goals scored. The team finishing third in the Premier League qualifies automatically for next season's Champions League, but the team finishing fourth will enter the competition in the final qualifying round.

Football: Remy in squad despite rape claim -- QPR

Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy could play in his side's final game of the season at Liverpool on Sunday despite being investigated over rape allegations, the London club said on Friday. Remy was released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of rape along with three other men over an offence that is alleged to have taken place in London on May 6. The 26-year-old France international denies the claim.

Football: QPR's Remy bailed in rape inquiry

QPR's France striker Loic Remy has been bailed after he was arrested on suspicion of rape, police said Thursday. Remy was held by Scotland Yard's sex crime squad along with two other men after a 34-year-old woman alleged three men raped her on May 6 in west London. Although police did not name Remy, it was widely reported in the British media that the 26-year-old was one of the three men that police said they had arrested and QPR said they were aware of the allegations against him. Scotland Yard said on Thursday that the three men had been bailed until September.
