NBA: James to be named MVP on Sunday - report

LeBron James will on Sunday be named the NBA Most Valuable Player for the fourth season in his career, the second year in a row and the fourth time in five seasons, ESPN reported on Friday. Citing unnamed league sources, the sports TV network said the Miami Heat star will join legends Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell as MVP award winners at least four times in their careers. A 120-member media panel votes to determine the MVP award winner.

Curry, Bogut lead Warriors to second-round playoff berth

U.S. Sports Desk, May 3 (EFE).- The Golden State Warriors pulled off the biggest surprise of the NBA playoffs thus far, wrapping up a 4-2 series victory over the Denver Nuggets to advance to a second-round match-up against the San Antonio Spurs. Star guard Stephen Curry and center Andrew Bogut were the keys for the Warriors in a series-clinging 92-88 victory Thursday night in Oakland over the Nuggets, a team of relative no-names who overachieved during the regular season but lacked an elite player to carry them in the playoffs.

NBA: Warriors hold off Nuggets to reach second round

The Golden State Warriors squandered an 18-point fourth-quarter lead but held on to beat the Denver Nuggets 92-88 on Thursday to reach the second round of the NBA playoffs. Stephen Curry scored 14 of his 22 points in a crucial third-quarter surge and Golden State survived some sloppy play in the fourth quarter to win the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series four-games-to-two.

NBA: Celtics claw their way back into series

Kevin Garnett finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds and Jason Terry had 17 points as the Boston Celtics staved off elimination with a 92-86 win over New York in game five Wednesday. Paul Pierce scored 16 points and Terry went five-of-nine from beyond the arc for the Celtics, who now trail in the best-of-seven first round playoff series three games to two. "We have got the heart of a champion," Terry said. "We are not going to lay down. Every game is a game seven for us. What do we really have to lose?"

NBA: Blazers Lillard named NBA's rookie of the year

Guard Damian Lillard, who was the Portland Trail Blazers sixth overall draft pick in 2012, has been named Wednesday as the National Basketball Association's top rookie. Lillard was a unanimous selection for the award after averaging 19.0 points and 6.5 assists in 82 games this past season. He beat out New Orleans Hornets centre Anthony Davis and Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal who finished second and third in voting by North American sportswriters.

NBA: Nuggets dunk Warriors to trim playoff deficit

Andre Iguodala scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Tuesday as the Denver Nuggets held off Golden State 107-100 to sustain their hopes of reaching the second round of the NBA playoffs. But Golden State coach Mark Jackson accused the Nuggets of deliberately trying to injure Warriors star Stephen Curry, raising the tensions in the Western Conference matchup. The Nuggets pulled within 3-2 of the Warriors in the best-of-seven playoff series, which continues Thursday at Golden State. The series winner will face West top seed San Antonio in the second round of the playoffs.
