Anthony Laffranchi's opportunistic second-half try proved crucial as St Helens sealed a fine comeback 30-22 Super League victory at the Leeds Rhinos on Monday. The former Australian international scooped up the loose ball and grounded it over the try line after a fumble from Leeds full back Zak Hardaker as he tried to wriggle out of the in-goal area under heavy Saints pressure. Leeds, the defending Super League champions, had earlier raced into a 16-0 lead in the opening stages as Kallum Watkins, Joel Moon and Rob Burrow all crossed.

RugbyU: Troubled ex-gridiron player takes a run at Olympics

Former collegiate gridiron star Maurice Clarett, who went to prison on robbery and weapons charges, is testing his skills at rugby sevens with an eye toward the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The Columbus Dispatch newspaper reported Friday that the former Ohio State star running back, who never made it in the National Football League, will play in the eight-team Ohio Rugby Sevens Invitational on May 25 at Mechanicsburg. Clarett will play for the Columbus affiliate of Tiger Rugby, the development program to select US players for the 2016 Olympics.

RugbyL: Wolves coach Smith salutes dominant Briers

Warrington Wolves head coach Tony Smith hailed the return of Lee Briers as the Challenge Cup holders dismantled Salford 52-6 in their fifth round tie at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Former Canberra Raider Joel Monaghan crossed twice for Warrington as did Stefan Ratchford, while Brett Hodgson finished with an 18-point haul. But it was the return of Briers, who has been out of action since February with neck and calf injuries, that delighted Smith.
