RugbyU: Deans talks up Folau's Lions chances

Coach Robbie Deans on Saturday said rugby league convert Israel Folau could play in a number of positions in the Wallabies backline against the touring British and Irish Lions this year. Folau, who was included in a preliminary 30-man Wallabies squad ahead of the June series with the Lions, was man of the match in the NSW Waratahs 25-20 win over defending Super 15 champions Waikato Chiefs in Sydney on Friday.

Australia cut loose in the final 30 minutes to overpower an under-strength New Zealand 32-12 in a trans-Tasman rugby league Test in Canberra on Friday. The Kangaroos won their sixth straight Test against the Kiwis in the countdown to October's World Cup in England and Wales. The depleted Kiwis, already without injured superstars Benji Marshall and Sonny Bill Williams and suspended forward Jeremy Smith, lost skipper Simon Mannering before kick-off with a calf strain.

RugbyL: England's Widdop to sign for Dragons

England international Gareth Widdop will leave Melbourne Storm to take up a four-year deal with the St George Illawarra Dragons from the 2014 National Rugby League season, the club said on Friday. Widdop, 24, who has played scrum-half, fullback and centre for his club and country, agreed to terms after meeting with St George Illawarra officials this week. The signing follows this week's announced departure of regular stand-off and goalkicker Jamie Soward on a four-year deal to Penrith Panthers from 2014.

RugbyL: Kiwis face big task against Kangaroos

New Zealand will be without their two superstars Benji Marshall and Sonny Bill Williams as they try to halt a losing five-match run against Australia in their rugby league Test on Friday. The Kangaroos are fielding a full-strength side in the first league Test played in the national capital Canberra against the World Cup holders. Playmaker Marshall is out with an injured toe while Williams, back in the 13-a-side code after a spell in rugby union during which he won the 2011 World Cup with the All Blacks, has knee trouble.

RugbyL: Monaghan inspires Wolves to win over Wildcats

Joel Monaghan made it six Super League tries in three games for Warrington Wolves with another double to down Wakefield Wildcats 41-34 on Sunday. Monaghan, who won the Mal Meninga Medal while at the Canberra Raiders in 2008, took his season's tally to 13 while Wolves full-back Brett Hodgson finished the game with 12 points. Wigan Warriors remain top of the table after their 36-6 rout over Bradford Bulls, with Blake Green helping himself to a try. Pat Richards finished the game with 12 points from the tee.
