RugbyL: Wolves coach Smith admits no Cup mercy

Warrington head coach Tony Smith admitted to fielding a strong team in the 74-4 Challenge Cup fourth round defeat of Keighley Cougars so that the Wolves can get back on form in the Super League. The defending champions headed to the Cougars having not strung a sequence of wins together in the Super League for four games however there was little doubt they would see off the Championship outfit.

RugbyL: Hodgson stars for rampant Wolves

Former Wests Tigers full-back Brett Hodgson racked up a personal haul of 26 points as Warrington Wolves got the defence of their Challenge Cup title off to a flying start with a comfortable fourth-round win. The Wire saw off Keighley Cougars 74-4, Ryan Atkins running in four of his side's 13 tries while Hodgson, who made over 100 appearances for the Tigers, added 11 goals and a score himself. Chris Riley and Rhys Williams both scored twice while Trent Waterhouse, Richie Myler, Gareth O'Brien and Glenn Riley also crossed for the holders in the easy win.

RugbyL: England's Widdop to sign for Dragons

England international Gareth Widdop will leave Melbourne Storm to take up a four-year deal with the St George Illawarra Dragons from the 2014 National Rugby League season, the club said on Friday. Widdop, 24, who has played scrum-half, fullback and centre for his club and country, agreed to terms after meeting with St George Illawarra officials this week. The signing follows this week's announced departure of regular stand-off and goalkicker Jamie Soward on a four-year deal to Penrith Panthers from 2014.

RugbyL: Kiwis face big task against Kangaroos

New Zealand will be without their two superstars Benji Marshall and Sonny Bill Williams as they try to halt a losing five-match run against Australia in their rugby league Test on Friday. The Kangaroos are fielding a full-strength side in the first league Test played in the national capital Canberra against the World Cup holders. Playmaker Marshall is out with an injured toe while Williams, back in the 13-a-side code after a spell in rugby union during which he won the 2011 World Cup with the All Blacks, has knee trouble.
