Savile police report reveals 'missed opportunities'

A British police report which found no evidence that late BBC star Jimmy Savile was protected from prosecution by officers revealed "yet more potential missed opportunities" to detain him over sex abuse claims while he was alive, a children's charity head said Friday. Television presenter Savile was a household name in Britain but since his death in October 2011 hundreds of allegations of rape and sexual assault have emerged against him, many involving under-age girls.

British television presenter Jim Davidson was on Wednesday rearrested by police investigating sexual abuse allegations, media reports said. Metropolitan Police said officers from Operation Yewtree, set up last year in the wake of claims of abuse against late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, said a 59-year-old man had been "further arrested on suspicion of sexual offences in connection with further allegations". He was initially detained on January 2 along with a 53-year-old man.

Lawyers for 31 alleged victims of sex abuse by late television presenter Jimmy Savile said Wednesday they have launched legal action against the star's estate and the BBC. Solicitor Alan Collins confirmed to AFP that a writ has been issued at the High Court in London in relation to alleged abuse by the BBC entertainer, who died in 2011 aged 84. LONDON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - The late British TV presenter Jimmy Savile physically abused hundreds of people over six decades, according to a police-led report on Friday which said he carried out attacks at the BBC and at hospitals where he did voluntary work. Of his victims, 73 percent were under 18 and 82 percent were female. The oldest was 47 and the youngest just 8. "Savile's offending footprint was vast, predatory and opportunistic," Commander Peter Spindler told reporters.
