Football: Lyon crash at Bastia to dent title hopes

Lyon's title hopes took a serious blow on Saturday as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Bastia which leaves them four points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who travel to Saint-Etienne on Sunday. "We were sleeping at the start of the match," said Lyon coach Remi Garde after a loss which moved Bastia up to joint 13th with fellow Corsican club Ajaccio after three second half goals handed Lyon their fourth away defeat of the season.

Football: Lyon crash at Bastia to dent title hopes

Lyon's title hopes took a serious blow on Saturday as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Bastia which leaves them four points back of leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who travel to Saint-Etienne on Sunday. Bastia are now joint 13th with fellow Corsican club Ajaccio after three second half goals handed Lyon their fourth away defeat of the season. On-loan midfielder Florian Thauvin broke open a tight first-half with a goal just before the break and although Lisandro Lopez equalised on 54 minutes, Bastia scored twice in five minutes to take command.

Football: Five sent-off as red mist shrouds Corsican derby

Bastia's 1-0 win over bitter Corsican rivals Ajaccio was overshadowed by an injury-time skirmish that prompted the referee, who had already sent-off one player, to issue four more red cards, two to each side. Veteran striker Toifilou Maoulida netted the Ligue 1 game's only goal two minutes after half-time to halt Bastia's run of six matches without victory but tempers flared at Stade Armand Cesari after home goalkeeper Mickael Landreau was caught by the boot of Kenyan forward Dennis Oliech in the closing stages.

Soccer-Bastia barred from playing at home for three games

PARIS, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Bastia have been barred from playing at home for three games and given a suspended two-point deduction after supporters of the Ligue 1 club were involved in a series of violent incidents, the French League (LFP) said on Friday. The club have already served one match of the ban when they beat basement side Nancy in Gueugnon, eastern France, last month after they were banned from using their own ground pending the ruling.
