Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan took four wickets in a devastating opening spell as South Africa were bowled out for 191 in the second one-day international against at SuperSport Park on Friday. Tall left-armer Irfan took a career-best four for 33 in seven overs. South Africa crashed to 62 for five under Irfan's onslaught but recovered to reach 177 for seven after 38.4 overs when a violent thunderstorm struck the ground and caused a stoppage of almost two-and-a-half hours.

3,000-plus coal workers strike in South Africa

Over 3,000 workers at five Exxaro coal mines in South Africa were on strike Monday over unpaid bonuses, a company spokesman said, prompting fears electricity supplies could be hit. "The strikes are related to different issues at the mines," company spokesman Win de Klerk said in a statement. "Production has stopped at these mines and Exxaro is engaging with unions and managing the situation to bring operations to normality as soon as possible," it said. The company supplies the state owned energy company Eskom with coal for power stations.

Cricket: Rain washes out South Africa v Pakistan T20 clash

The first Twenty20 international between South Africa and Pakistan was abandoned because of rain at Kingsmead on Friday. Rain fell for most of the afternoon and was still falling at the scheduled time for the toss. Although the pitch area was covered there were large puddles on the outfield and ground staff said it would have taken at least two hours to get the field ready if the rain stopped. The umpires called off the match about half an hour after it was due to start. The second and final match in the series is scheduled for Centurion on Sunday.

South Africa to explore legal rhino horn trade: minister

South Africa is exploring the legal trade of rhino horn to counter a poaching bloodbath that has surged despite tighter security controls, the environment minister said Thursday. "We are investigating," minister Edna Molewa told AFP, saying cabinet had mandated the ministry to look into the matter. The trade is banned internationally but it has been punted as a possible tool against the insatiable Asian demand for horn that is fuelling the slaughter. So far this year, 128 rhinos have been lost after a record 668 animals were killed last year.
