Football: Last-gasp Lyon keep title hopes alive

A goal in the third minute of injury time from Clement Grenier gave Lyon a 2-1 win at champions Montpellier on Friday to keep their slim French title hopes alive. The win moved Lyon into second place on 59 points, one ahead of Marseille, who have a game in hand, but eight behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain. Grenier's potentialy decisive strike came after a corner from Yoann Gourcuff was only half-cleared by an Abdelhamid El-Kaoutari header. The ball fell for Grenier whose half-volley from the edge of the penalty area found the net off the crossbar.

Football: Saint-Etienne dismiss final favourites tag

Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier has dismissed suggestions that his team should be considered as favourites to win Saturday's French League Cup final against Rennes at the Stade de France. The form book suggests Les Verts are the favourites to win the club's first national final in 31 years, even if their unbeaten start to 2013 was finally ended in Tuesday's French Cup quarter-final defeat to Lorient. Rennes have not won any of their last eight games and coach Frederic Antonetti this week described his team as 'losers'.

Marseille rely on strong defence in home straight

By Julien Pretot PARIS (Reuters) - Despite a heavy international presence up front, Olympique Marseille are relying on their defence of steel in their bid for a Champions League direct qualifying spot. Second-placed OM, who take on second-from-bottom Stade Brest on Saturday (1600 BST), have not conceded a goal in their last five Ligue 1 outings, thanks to sterling performances by centre backs Lucas Mendes and Nicolas N'Koulou, while keeper Steve Mandanda produced a world-class performance in the 0-0 draw at Lille last Sunday.

PSG domestic double bid collapses at Evian

PARIS (Reuters) - Paris Saint Germain's ambitions of a domestic double collapsed on Wednesday when Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva missed the first two attempts in a penalty shootout after their French Cup quarter-final against Evian Thonon Gaillard had finished in a 1-1 draw. The wealthy Paris club have a nine-point lead in Ligue 1 with six games remaining while Evian are only three points above the relegation zone.

Football: Girard relaxed about future post-Montpellier

Montpellier coach Rene Girard on Wednesday admitted that he may not return to management when he leaves the Ligue 1 club this summer. Girard led the modest southern outfit to the title for the first time in their history last season, but has been told that his contract will not be renewed when it expires in the summer. Former Marseille and Auxerre coach Jean Fernandez is being tipped to replace him. "I'm getting old," Girard told reporters on Wednesday ahead of Friday's Ligue 1 match against Lyon.

Football: Late Aliadiere strike stuns Les Verts

Jeremie Aliadiere's stoppage-time strike took Lorient through to the semi-finals of the French Cup on Tuesday as the Brittany side won 2-1 away to Saint-Etienne in their quarter-final tie. Aliadiere brilliantly converted a Mathias Autret cross three minutes into injury time to keep modest Lorient in with a chance of winning the Cup for the second time in their history.

Football: Marseille held at Lille, Lyon stop freefall

Marseille's slim hopes of catching French title favourites Paris Saint-Germain were further diminished as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Lille on Sunday, while Lyon hauled themselves back into the Champions League places with a 3-1 victory at home to Toulouse. An inspired Steve Mandanda was to thank as Marseille were fortunate to claim a point against in-form Lille, who had won on seven of their last eight outings prior to Sunday's clash in northern France.

Inspired Mandanda saves Marseille as PSG move clear

PARIS (Reuters) - Goalkeeper Steve Mandanda produced a superb performance to help Olympique Marseille grab a 0-0 draw at Lille on Sunday, leaving Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain nine points clear with six games left. Marseille, who recorded their fifth consecutive clean-sheet, failed to threaten their sixth-placed hosts but proved solid enough to stay second in the standings with 58 points. Lille, who had scored in their 10 previous games in all competitions, were left frustrated in sixth on 53 points.
