US army seeks new technology to replace GPS

The US army is working to limit its dependence on GPS by developing the next generation of navigation technology, including a tiny autonomous chip, the director of the Pentagon's research agency said Wednesday. DARPA, the research group behind a range of spy tech and which helped invent the Internet, was also the driving force behind the creation of the Global Positioning System, director Arati Prabhakar said at a press conference. "In the 1980s, when GPS satellites started to become widely deployed... it meant carrying an enormous box around on your vehicle," she said.

TomTom says sales fall, turning from navigation market

TomTom, the Dutch maker of vehicle navigation systems, on Tuesday published a 13 percent drop in first quarter sales and said it was diversifying its product line to counter a market now saturated with portable navigation devices. TomTom's sales fell to 202 million euros ($262 million) and the group posted a net loss of 2.3 million euros, worse than the loss of 1.5 million euros suffered in the same period a year earlier, the group said in a statement.

TomTom CEO sees no signs of recovery in car sales

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - TomTom, Europe's largest maker of navigation devices and among the three biggest digital map-makers in the world, said it sees no sign of a recovery in car sales to which its own fortunes are tied. The Dutch company stuck to the full-year forecasts it gave in February for adjusted earnings per share of about 0.20 euros, down 50 percent from the 2012 EPS of 0.40 euros, and revenue in the range of 900 million euros to 950 million euros, down from 1.06 billion euros in 2012.

British waterway deploys ship safety aid to combat GPS attacks

Mariners increasingly rely on global navigation systems that use satellite signals to find a location or keep exact time. One of the most well known is the Global Positioning System or GPS.
