Athletics: James claims victory over rivals in Shanghai

Olympic champion Kirani James powered to victory against his controversial predecessor and his main rivals from London 2012 in the 400m at Shanghai's Diamond League meet on Saturday. James, from Grenada, raced ahead on the final bend to edge 2008 Olympic champion, the USA's Lashawn Merritt, into second place. Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic, the silver medallist from last summer's Games, was third, more than a second behind James, who crossed the line at a season's best 44.02.

Olympic 110m hurdles champion Aries Merritt said in an interview published on Monday that he believes his world record at the distance could soon be lowered. "I think that the world record will come down below 12.8secs. Soon," he was quoted as saying in French sports newspaper L'Equipe. "Many of us can run 12.9 and a lot are working hard to break the record and and the magic number 12.8," the 27-year-old American added. Merritt shattered the previous record of 12.87secs held by Cuba's Dayron Robles at the final Diamond League meeting last September in Brussels.

Six-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt edged teammate Kemar Bailey-Cole in a photo finish to win the 100 metres at the Cayman Invitational track meet on Wednesday. Jamaica's Bolt kicked his 100-metre season off Wednesday with a less than impressive time of 10.09 seconds at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. Bailey-Cole, who finished with the same time, is one of Bolt's training partners. Antiguan Daniel Bailey finished third with a time of 10.23. Bolt has been battling a hamstring problem but said that wasn't to blame for the slow time.

Athletics: Japan teen sprinter targets 9.96 seconds

Japanese teen sprint sensation Yoshihide Kiryu, the joint junior 100m world record holder, has revealed his target time for the season is 9.96 seconds after writing the figure on a school blackboard. The 17-year-old said he wrote goal on the athletics facility board at his high school after clocking the record equalling time of 10.01 seconds in a domestic race last Monday. "I've written it off the top of my head," Kiryu told reporters after finishing third in at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix, the third leg of the 15-round IAAF World Challenge series, in Tokyo on Sunday.

Teenage girl suffers fatal medical emergency during Toronto Marathon

TORONTO - Toronto's GoodLife Fitness Marathon was marred by the death of an 18-year-old Nova Scotia girl who collapsed near the end of Sunday's race. Police say attempts were made to revive her, but she was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital. The exact cause of death is not yet known — police said only that the girl suffered a medical emergency. Police didn't reveal her name, but the Cape Breton Post identifies the teen as Emma van Nostrand, a Grade 12 honour student at Riverview High School in Cape Breton.
