Athletics: Qatar's Barshim impresses with 2.40m in Eugene

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim posted the best outdoor high jump since 2000 on Saturday with a winning leap of 2.40m at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting. The Qatari's performance was the most impressive in a spate of season-leading efforts produced in the fourth of 14 stops in the IAAF's elite Diamond League series. The 2012 Olympic bronze medallist is now tied with four other athletes as the fourth-best performers all-time outdoors in the discipline and his clearance was the highest indoors or out since the 2.40 of Russian Ivan Ukhov indoors in February of 2009.

Athletics: James, Merritt to renew 400m rivalry in Eugene

Olympic champion Kirani James will try to build on his sizzling Shanghai performance when he leads a talent-loaded 400m field Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League athletics meeting. James, who became Grenada's first Olympic medallist in any sport when he won the 400m gold in London last year, clocked the best time in the world this year of 44.02sec at the IAAF Diamond League stop in Shanghai on May 18. In Shanghai, he got the better of 2008 Olympic gold medallist LaShawn Merritt, leaving the American out for revenge on home soil.

Athletics: Injured Rudisha out of Prefontaine

Olympic 800m champion and world record-holder David Rudisha pulled out of this weekend's Prefontaine Classic Diamond League athletics meeting Thursday with a knee injury, organizers said. An MRI scan performed on Wednesday in Eugene, Oregon revealed the injury, which Rudisha's manager James Templeton told organizers was to the Kenyan athlete's right knee.

Las Vegas Rock 'n' Roll marathon organizers tout shift in race course; date shift to Nov. 17

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Las Vegas Rock 'n' Roll Marathon organizers are unveiling several changes to the race this year, including shifting the race date to Nov. 17. Competitor Group executive Adam Zocks joined Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman on Thursday to talk about the new date, new course route and plans for security in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing in March. Officials say they're co-ordinating security plans with Las Vegas police.

The new president will be elected on September 10.

Legendary pole vaulter Sergei Bubka, who currently presides Ukraine's National Olympic Committee, announced Tuesday his candidacy to succeed International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge "After a long reflection I have decided to put myself forward for the election of the IOC president," Bubka was quoted as saying by the local press. "I want to add that I fully understand all the responsibilities that I would have to carry in this post."

Ethiopian winner of Boston marathon tells of his sorrow

The Ethiopian winner of the Boston marathon who crossed the finish line just hours before it was attacked pledged Sunday to return next year, saying "sport should never be a battleground". Lelisa Desisa, 23, also told staff from the US embassy at a ceremony attended by US Secretary of State John Kerry that he would donate his winning medal back to the people of Boston as a gesture of solidarity.
