In a bunch sprint for second place former Tour de France winner Cadel Evans edged out reigning Giro champion Ryder Hesjedal as the overall favourites finished in a small group 16sec back. In his first ever Giro at the age of 36, Paolini took over the leader's jersey from countryman Salvatore Puccio of Team Sky, who was distanced on the final climb.

British sprint king Mark Cavendish won a chaotic opening stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday to pull on the race leader's pink jersey for the third time in his career. Paralysed Japan man gets $2m over Italy bike crash

A Japanese man who became a quadriplegic after the front wheel of his Italian Bianchi-brand bicycle came off has been awarded $2 million in a compensation lawsuit, reports said. The Tokyo District Court ordered the Japanese importer of Bianchi bicycles to pay 189 million yen ($2 million) to the plaintiff in damages, in addition to 38 million yen to reimburse his insurer, Jiji Press said.

Sao Paulo mayor pledges steps to improve cyclists' safety

Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad on Friday pledged to improve the safety for cyclists following an incident in which a hit-and-run driver dumped the severed arm of a cyclist he had struck into a local river. Haddad met with a delegation of cyclists to discuss planned investments to expand the city's 55-kilometer (32-mile) biking trail network and the launch of a traffic education campaign with classes on rules and safety.
