Salvadoran doctors perform C-section in high risk pregnancy

Doctors performed a C-section Monday on a chronically ill Salvadoran woman denied an abortion despite her high-risk pregnancy, in a case that garnered global attention. The 22-year-old woman was in a stable condition after undergoing a cesarean in the early afternoon, Health Minister Maria Isabel Rodriguez said. The baby, a girl, was born without a brain and lived for only five hours, she said. Abortions are strictly forbidden in this Central American country, even when the mother's life is at risk. The sentence for violating the ban is 50 years in prison.

Court urges protections for Salvadoran seeking abortion

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) on Thursday urged El Salvador to take "urgent measures" to protect a chronically ill Salvadoran woman seeking an abortion that could save her life. "Due to the health condition of the mother, this pregnancy endangers her life, a fact that merits urgent and extreme measures to safeguard her health," read the ruling from the IACHR, an autonomous rights arm of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Mexican woman receives first transplant of ovaries in Latin America

Mexico City, May 23 (EFE).- A Mexican woman received Latin America's first transplant of ovaries in a hospital in the western city of Guadalajara, the director of the Mexican Infertility Institute, Luis Arturo Ruvalcaba, announced. Ruvalcaba told Efe by telephone that the patient is a 32-year-old women who had developed cervical and uterine cancer that was detected and treated in France.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The first woman to have a successful womb transplant from a dead donor is pregnant, a hospital in southern Turkey said. Derya Sert, 22, who was born without a womb, had been receiving in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment after the transplant in August 2011.

Robert Edwards, the British scientist awarded a Nobel prize for his pioneering work in developing in vitro fertilisation (IVF), died on Monday aged 87, his university announced. "It is with deep sadness that the family announces that Professor Sir Robert Edwards, Nobel prizewinner, scientist and co-pioneer of IVF, passed away peacefully in his sleep on 10th April 2013 after a long illness," the University of Cambridge said in a statement. ar/dk/fb

Birth defects in multiples is on the rise: study

Feb 8 (Reuters) - The number of birth defects among multiple births such as twins and triplets increased nearly two-fold in a score of European countries over a 24-year-period, according to an international study. Researchers writing in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology used data on more than 5.4 million births occurring between 1984 and 2007 to find that congenital defects rose from around 6 in every 10,000 multiple births to about 11 in every 10,000 multiples.
