Cricket: Rising Australian star Starc hits contract jackpot

Cricket Australia unveiled Wednesday a list of 20 contracted players for the new season amid reports that star bowler Mitchell Starc is celebrating a million dollar pay-day. With the retirements of former skipper Ricky Ponting and stalwart Mike Hussey, funds were freed up for a changing of the guard in the lucrative 2013-14 roster. Sydney's Daily Telegraph said Starc was the big winner when the National Selection Panel (NSP) made its pick. The 23-year-old left-armer broke onto the scale last season with a base deal reportedly worth Aus$230,000 (US$240,000) a year.

Cricket: Surgery for Starc ahead of Ashes

Australian pace bowler Mitchell Starc will have surgery later this week on an ankle injury as he races the clock to be fit for the Ashes series against England, Cricket Australia said Tuesday. The left-armer will return from the team's tour of India early, missing the fourth Test, for the operation. Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said Starc, who has taken 30 wickets in his nine-Test career, would have bone spurs on his right ankle removed. "Mitch will have surgery later this week and we'll assess his recovery as he returns to bowling," he said in a statement.

Ben Rohrer, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Josh Hazlewood were chosen for the first time, while wicketkeeper Brad Haddin and paceman Clint McKay have previously played for Australia in the T20 format.

Cricket: Starc bowls Australia to victory

A maiden century from George Bailey and another inspired bowling performance from the emerging Mitchell Starc helped Australia beat the West Indies by 54 runs in the second one-day international at the WACA Ground on Sunday. Set 267 to win after Bailey's unbeaten 125 rescued the Australian innings, the West Indies were cruising at 159 for three in the run chase, before the return of Starc to the attack turned the match again as the tourists were bowled out 212 in the 39th over.

Cricket-Starc grabs five wickets as Australia crush Windies

PERTH, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Paceman Mitchell Starc helped consign West Indies to their third lowest total in one-day internationals as Australia's top order needed less than 10 overs to race to a nine-wicket victory at the WACA on Friday. Man-of-the-match Starc captured five wickets for 20 and burly quick Clint McKay returned figures of 3-10 as the tourists were skittled for 70, having won the toss and elected to bat first on a baking hot day.
