Russia says kills senior Islamist insurgent

Dzhamaleil Mutaliyev, a senior figure in a group fighting to establish an Islamist state, was killed along with another militant in a shootout in the town of Nazran in Ingushetia, a spokesman for local investigators said.

Death toll from Dagestan bombings lowered to 3

Moscow, May 20 (EFE).- The death toll from the car-bomb attacks Monday in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian federal republic of Dagestan, has been revised downward to three, with more than a dozen people wounded, officials said. "According to preliminary figures, three people died - a police officer, an operations officer and a marshal. More than 10 people were wounded," the official Dagestan Interior Ministry spokesman said. The government initially told the Interfax news agency that at least eight people were killed when the two car bombs exploded.

At least three people were killed and nearly 50 injured on Monday in twin car blasts outside a court building in a southern Russian city in the restive region of Dagestan. The local investigative committee initially said that "within the space of a few minutes, two cars blew up. At least eight people died." The local interior ministry later revised the toll to three people killed and 44 injured -- most of them seriously.

Four dead as military police, rebels clash in C.Africa

At least four people died and several were injured in fighting between military police and Seleka rebels in the Central African Republic at the weekend, a military police official said Monday. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the fighting broke out Sunday in the town of Bimbo south of the capital after members of the Seleka rebel coalition "stole and hid" several vehicles. He said military police had gone to recover the vehicles, but the alleged thieves resisted and one of the rebels was shot by the officers.

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (Reuters) - Two car bombs killed at least three people and wounded dozens of others on Monday in Dagestan, a turbulent province in Russia's North Caucasus region where armed groups are waging an Islamist insurgency. Car bombs, suicide bombings and firefights are common in Dagestan, at the center of an insurgency rooted in two post-Soviet wars against separatist rebels in neighboring Chechnya.

"Two car bombs exploded within minutes. According to preliminary figures, at least eight people died. The number of wounded is not known," a government spokesman told the Interfax news agency. The car bombs were detonated next to a police building, the spokesman said.

Three policemen shot dead in Russia's restive Dagestan

Three police officers were killed and two more injured when gunmen opened fire on their cars in Russia's restive region of Dagestan, investigators said Wednesday. A police major and two other officers were killed on Tuesday evening while driving through Buinaksk, a city about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the capital of Dagestan, Makhachkala, in Russia's North Caucasus. "Unidentified persons ... opened automatic gunfire" at the two cars the policemen were travelling in, said a statement on the Investigative Committee website.

Officials probe links between Canadian jihadist, Boston bombing suspect

MAKACHKALA, Russia - Questions have been raised about the significance of a potential link between one of the Boston bombing suspects and a Canadian jihadist who was killed by police in southern Russia last year. Security officials in Russia said Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev disappeared during a trip to the province of Dagestan after the death of William Plotnikov last July. Plotnikov — who was born in Russia but immigrated to Toronto with his parents as a teen — was killed in Dagestan, where he had travelled to join Islamic militants.
