Three Islamists shot dead in Bangladesh security crackdown

Bangladesh police shot dead three activists from the country's largest Islamist party in clashes on Sunday, officers said, amid allegations security forces are targeting opposition supporters for execution. Police said the three were killed during two separate gunbattles with bomb-throwing activists from the Jamaat-e-Islami party in two southeastern towns, clashes that also left several officers injured. "They threw bombs at us and the joint forces opened fire in self-defence. A gunfight ensued," a local police chief, Shahjahan Ali, told AFP.

Female suicide bomber wounds 18 in Russia's Dagestan

A female suicide bomber blew herself up in front of policemen in Russia's Dagestan on Saturday, injuring 18 people in the second bombing attack to hit the restive region this week, officials said. Two of the victims -- both policemen -- were in a critical condition, police said. The attack took place not far from the interior ministry building in the centre of Makhachkala, interior ministry spokeswoman Fatina Ubaidatova told AFP. An unidentified woman came up to traffic police and detonated an explosive, according to the Moscow-based Investigative Committee.

5 Jamaat-Shibir men held for killing cop in Jhenidah

Russian forces kill 3 suspected militants in Caucasus -Ifax

Two killed in Russia's Dagestan when police storm house

MOSCOW, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Russian security forces killed a suspected militant while storming a house in Dagestan, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday. The raid, in which a member of the security forces was also killed, took place in Novy Khushet, a village near Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan in the volatile North Caucausus region. News agencies earlier reported that security forces had surrounded a house in the village where two suspected militants were holed up.
