Cruz Azul tops Santos Laguna to advance to Liga MX final

Mexico City, May 20 (EFE).- Cruz Azul beat Santos Laguna 2-1 in the second leg of their semifinal, winning 5-1 on aggregate to set up a clash with America in the Liga MX final. Coming into the match down 3-0 after the first leg, Santos emphasized offense from the start, but a giveaway by Rodolfo Salinas in the 8th minute led to the first of Javier Orozco's two goals for Cruz Azul. A beautiful ball from Pablo Barrera set up Orozco's second tally, at the 25-minute mark.

America beats Monterrey 2-1, qualifies for final

Mexico City, May 19 (EFE).- America beat Monterrey 2-1 after tying them 2-2 in the first match of a two-game series, thus qualifying for the final in the Mexican Clausura soccer tournament. America will next go up later this week against the winner of the Cruz Azul-Santos two-game semifinals match-up, the second contest of which is to be played on Sunday. In the first game, Cruz Azul smashed Santos 3-0 in an away match in the Torreon stadium and thus has the wind at their backs for the second confrontation.

Mexican federation suspends coach for 2 matches after altercation

Mexico City, May 14 (EFE).- The Mexican Soccer Federation's disciplinary committee handed down a two-match suspension to Atlas coach Tomas Boy for a scuffle with an opposing manager. Angry after his team lost 3-1 in a quarterfinal with Santos Laguna, Boy tried to attack one of the opposing goal-scorers, but was intercepted by coach Pedro Caixinha. The Atlas manager then pushed Caixinha in a scene that provoked widespread disgust in the Mexican media. Another incident in the same match earned Atlas goalkeeper Miguel Pinto a one-match suspension.

Tigres beat America to take Clausura 2013 lead

Mexico City, May 5 (EFE).- Tigres beat America on the latter's home turf 2-0 to regain the lead in Mexico's Clausura 2013 soccer tourney, which this weekend finished up its regular season and goes into the playoff phase where the top eight teams will vie for the title. Brazilian Danilinho scored in the 47th minute and Argentina's Lucas Lobos found the net in the 58th minute in Saturday's victory, giving Tigres the win, a total of 35 points and undisputed leadership in the tourney.

Tigres' unbeaten streak snapped

Mexico City, Apr 15 (EFE).- League-leading Tigres lost 2-1 to UNAM Pumas after going undefeated for the first 13 matches of the Clausura season, while second-place Atlas put concerns about relegation behind them. Emanuel Villa scored the lone goal for Tigres to reclaim the top spot in the Liga MX scoring race with nine tallies, despite missing five matches due to injury. Both Tigres, with 29 points, and Atlas, with 28, are all but assured of qualifying for the eight-team playoff.

Pumas move up to 5th as Tigres extend unbeaten streak to 13

Mexico City, Apr 8 (EFE).- The UNAM Pumas moved up to fifth place in the Liga MX with a 2-1 road win over Pachuca, while league-leading Tigres played to a scoreless tie with Leon to remain unbeaten 13 weeks into the season. Pumas and Pachuca each have 20 points, but the UNAM squad has the better goal differential. Tigres, with 29 points, are only a win or a tie away from matching the Liga MX record of 14 consecutive matches without a loss, set by Chivas in 2001. Second-place Atlas tied Morelia 0-0 and No. 4 Santos Laguna's duel with Tijuana also ended with no goals.

Cruz Azul needs playoff berth to salvage season, Gimenez says

Mexico City, Apr 2 (EFE).- Cruz Azul midfielder Christian Gimenez said his team must do more than beat America in this week's Copa MX semifinal if it wants to salvage what has been a disappointing Clausura season. Currently 13th overall in Liga MX, Cruz Azul is three points out of a playoff spot.

Atlas beats Cruz Azul, takes first place in Mexican soccer

Mexico City, Mar 31 (EFE).- Atlas beat Cruz Azul 2-1 to become the new leaders in the Clausura 2013 Mexican soccer tourney at the beginning of the 12th week of the championship. Luis Ramos scored in the 39th minute of Saturday's match and Vicente Matias Vuosso added a goal in the 55th minute for the visitors, while Israel Castro found the net for the home squad, who remain out of the qualifying zone, in the 51st minute. The first period was rather lackluster except for the fact that Ramos managed to knock a header in.

Mexico City, Mar 17 (EFE).- America fought San Luis to a 1-1 draw on the weekend and kept its third-place spot in the 11th week of the Mexican Clausura soccer tourney, while Queretaro beat Toluca 1-0. The results of the two matches left Queretaro and San Luis in a battle for their lives with each other, given that they are last and next-to-last, respectively, in the percentage table that determines who will be relegated to second division.
